Message from Mrs. Post….
On Monday, we saw quite an unusual sight on our backfield. They were two Canadian geese and with the rains, they looked to be enjoying the gray, wet day! It was sure fun to see them on our school grounds.
Friday night was so much fun at the Ice Station. I saw so many students and their parents having a good time together. Thank you for the support of our school. Thank you Mrs. Diana and Mr. Tiengerd for organizing this fun family night. Again thank you to all the parents who helped by volunteering for each of the Health Week’s activities.
On Saturday morning, I stopped by Plum Canyon to wish our Math Field Day teams well. I saw them at break/snack time. Thank you again to Mr. Steve Goldstein for working with our students. I will post results on the front office window. Our students placed in six events and the fourth grade team took a first in Statistics, Data and Probability. Thank you to the teams: Fourth Grade Team: Kusal Uprety, Ashley Song, Jayden Yamasaki and Isabelle Goralsky; Fifth Grade Team: Alex Tsatryan, Ryan Borchetta, Alisha Mehta, and Scarlett Manning; Sixth Grade Team: Chidinma Ikonte, Amy Phung, Jared Onsing, and Cole Edwards.
The Festival of the Arts is back this year and will be held on June 1, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church. The theme is Imagine and besides the Honors Band/Orchestra and Honors Chorus, there are two new categories for students to participate in this year. The Artifacts category is open to K-2; 3&4; and 5&6. Artifacts will be presented in the foyer of Grace Baptist on a tri-fold display board. The artifact is not limited to a drawing but can also be a sculpture. The artifact will be due for judging on Friday, May 11th. There will be one chosen at each level (K-2; 3&4; 5&6). The other new category is Poetry Reading and the theme is also Imagine. This is open to all students in K-6; there is a one-minute time-limit; and one poem per site. Student poems will be due by April 20th. A flyer will be coming with this same information. Spring Break will be here soon and might provide an opportunity for your child to work on these activities.
Congratulations to Mrs. Conley’s first grade class and Mrs. Davis’ Kindergarten class! Both classes worked on collecting seals from milk cartons and then were entered in a drawing. Mrs. Conley’s class won third place in the state of California! Yeah! They won a Wii Fit for each student and both classes earned an ice cream party last week. The representatives from the Dairy Council and a representative from Scholastic Books joined us at the ice cream party. They presented the school with a check for $11,500.00 from the Dairy Council and Scholastic Books is rewarding our school with $500 worth of books. Thank you to everyone who participated in this wonderful event!
We had news from Mrs. Marianne Smith and she has undergone back surgery and is on the mend. She must go through quite a few months of physical therapy. The district has assigned Mrs. Melissa Crawford, Speech Pathologist, to our school and she will be here five days a week. I hope you will welcome Mrs. Crawford and make her feel a part of the Tesoro family.
Looking for something for your child to do over Spring Break? I am attaching a Report to Parents-The Rewards of Reading for your reading pleasure. The Santa Clarita libraries have some special opportunities for our students as well. Kelly Behle, Youth Services Coordinator for the City of Santa Clarita Public Library, shared that the Santa Clarita libraries have a Reading Enrichment Story Time Program for K-3rd graders. The Story Time Program is available as follows: Mondays at Newhall Library at 4:00 p.m.; Tuesdays at Valencia Library at 7:00 p.m.; Thursdays at Canyon Country Library at 6:00 p.m. Suggestion: Call or go on-line to check schedules during Spring Break!

Message from Mrs. Post….
Spring begins today! One wonders where winter has been. It seems that winter might be giving us a late dose of cold and rain! Please remind your child/children to layer for these chilly mornings.
Yesterday I had the privilege of being part of a California Distinguished School Validation Team, and it was interesting being on the other side of the visit! Mr. Rude and I joined Mrs. Chris Hamlin, SUSD Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, in a visit to an LAUSD school in the San Fernando Valley. It was truly a gem of a school with a very enthusiastic and dedicated staff. With all the politicians and news media telling us that our education system is a disaster and “needs fixing”, it is encouraging to see our local schools in Southern California making great strides in education for our children. Our teachers and staff do make the difference for our children!
I have several students who need to be congratulated and honored this week:
Congratulations to Lindsay Schindler, grade four, and Marijose Ortiz Aub, grade five, who will represent
Tesoro in the district Jr. Toastmasters’ competition. Lindsay will compete in the area of Informative Speeches and Marijose will compete in the area of Persuasive Speeches. The competitions will be held at North Park Elementary in April. Congratulations to Tiffany Hyon, grade one, who entered the PTA Reflections contest in October and moved to the PTA District Council competition. Her entry in visual arts competed at the state PTA level and is now going on to the National PTA level. Way to go, Tiffany! Congratulations to our Read Across American Week essay contest winners, Chidinma Ikonte, grade six, and Justine Cabot, grade one, who wrote the winning essays describing why they love to read! We are so proud of all our students!
The Mother Son Bowling on Sunday was a great success. The bowling lanes were filled and everyone looked like they were having a wonderful time! What a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Thank you to Mrs. Elvira Acosta and her committee who arranged for the special event.
Health Week has arrived! Did you walk to school on Monday even though it was cold outside? If not, how about trying it later this week or perhaps, when it warms up at the end of the day! Fun activities have been planned all week include: health speakers coming to classrooms, local dentists donating toothbrushes to our students, lunch recess music and dancing fun, a musical assembly “I’m Taking Care of Me” produced by our very own Glee Club teacher, Mrs. Wendy Hirsch, health pledges, rewards for eating healthy snacks and lunches, Jump Bunch recess exercise activities, freeze dancing, and of course, ice skating at Family Night this Friday. Good health and safety tips continue next Monday as well with the LA Troupe of the Safety Smart Program doing a special assembly on Fire and Burn Prevention! Wow! Thanks to Mrs. Galarza, Mrs. Fenelon, Mrs. Cohan and many more volunteers who have planned and organized the entire event!
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, April 14th Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Roundup at COC in their South Parking Lot. The event is 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Many parents have asked what they can do to help the district, our school, our teachers, and our students in the budget crisis in California. The following are names, addresses, emails and phone numbers that you may contact to voice your support of our schools.

Message from Mrs. Post….
Thursday’s California Distinguished School visit went very well. Thank you to staff, students and parents who participated. The visiting team was impressed with what we had written into our application. They were able to see first hand what we had written into our application. They visited classrooms, talked with staff and students, visited preschool and Child Care, and met with parents from Site Council and PTA. The team’s report of findings will be sent to the county offices, and in mid April the State Superintendent of Schools will make the announcement of all the California Distinguished School Awards.
On Monday, report cards were sent home, so please be sure that you’ve checked your child’s backpack if you have not seen his/her report card. Teachers are contacting parents for conferences if one is needed. Should you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
Don’t forget that crazy schedule for dismissal this week. Due to minutes required by the state, first and second grade dismissal was at 2:04 p.m. Monday and Tuesday this week. All grades have Minimum Day dismissal at 12:35 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Remember there is no school on Friday, March 16th as it is a Furlough Day for the Saugus Union School District.
Congratulations to the Kindergartners in Mrs. Fujino and Galarza’s class as they had the most participants at McTeacher Night. They’ve earned a hamburger party from McDonald’s. Way to go Kindergartners in Room 7!
Congratulations to 5th grade students in Room 27. They read the most minutes in the reading contest during Read Across America Week. They’ve earned a pizza party and the classroom receives a $50.00 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble for classroom books.
Congratulations to Tyler Sushinsky in grade 2-Mrs. Palomino’s class. He read the most minutes of all our students in our school. Wow! Great job, Tyler!
On Wednesday, March 14th, the school district will have a informational budget meeting here at Tesoro at 6 p.m. in the MPR. Earlier this month a notice was sent home with your child, letting you know that there are several meetings throughout the district to keep parents informed regarding the budget crisis. We hope you can attend at least one of these meetings.
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, April 14th Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Roundup at COC in their South Parking Lot. The event is 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS BINS
The PTA could use a little help from you to prepare your kids for an emergency. We are gathering supplies for our disaster bin and could use notepads and colored pencils. Many stores currently have these items on clearance for as low as 25 cents. These supplies will be used to give your children something to do as they face a potentially lengthy wait for parents or others you may have designated to pick them up from school. If you are able to help, please send the items in with your children clearly marked for the PTA Disaster Bin.
Thank you,
TaShera Jenkins

Message from Mrs. Post….
This past weekend, Mr. Andrew Rude and his son, Spencer, were busy completing the installation of the tile wall for those sixth graders who have been here since Kindergarten. There are forty-five students who attended Tesoro all seven of those years and we have also put up a framed photo of them in our school office. Thank you, Mr. Rude and Spencer for your time and effort this past weekend!
This Wednesday, March 7th will be the Panoramic Photo for all sixth grade students and their teachers. The photo will be taken at approximately 8:30 a.m. and we hope for a sunny, calm day! No wind allowed! Thank you, Mrs. Patty Brauneisen, for once again planning the photo days for us. Spring photos are planned for next week on Wednesday, March 14th. More information to follow.
A flyer will be sent home today with the schedule of dismissal times for next week, March 12-15. Please remember that Wednesday is now a school day, while Friday, March 16th has been designated as a Furlough Day for the Saugus Union School District. We ask that with the minimum days next week, everyone practice safe driving in and around our school. The parking lot is closed at dismissal times to ensure the safety of students and parents. Please make every effort to use the valet line and while it may take a bit longer due to more students at dismissal time, the traffic is more manageable with valet. Thank you for your cooperation.
Thank you to PTA Chairperson, Mrs. Jennifer Spiker, for her work organizing a delightful and fun Read Across America Week. All the activities proved fun and exciting for our students. We await the results of the “Why I Love to Read” essay contest as well as the winners of the “Reading Contest”.
This Thursday, March 8th marks the visit of the California Distinguished School Site Visit by a team of educators who will review our application and will validate what we are accomplishing with our students and staff at Tesoro del Valle. We are asking that students show their school spirit and wear their school shirts or school colors (Silver and Bronze). We are excited to have the team here and can’t wait to tell them about our school!
Many parents have asked what they can do to help the district, our school, our teachers, and our students in the budget crisis in California. The following are names, addresses, emails and phone numbers that you may contact to voice your support of our schools.

YEARBOOK UPDATES
The yearbook committee’s goal is to involve as many Tesoro families to share the wonderful pictures captured during school events. Every picture shared will contribute to the creation of a diverse representation of the children in the yearbook. Not to mention the excitement from the kids and parents alike looking for pictures they took in the yearbook.
If you have pictures to share, please leave them in the PTA Yearbook mailbox and email us at Tesoro.yearbook@yahoo.com If you have questions, or are interested in joining the committee and participate at events as time allows, we have CDs for you to transfer files.
Thank you and looking forward to a fun year,
Christina & Louis Polio
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS BINS
The PTA could use a little help from you to prepare your kids for an emergency. We are gathering supplies for our disaster bin and could use notepads and colored pencils. Many stores currently have these items on clearance for as low as 25 cents. These supplies will be used to give your children something to do as they face a potentially lengthy wait for parents or others you may have designated to pick them up from school. If you are able to help, please send the items in with your children clearly marked for the PTA Disaster Bin.
Thank you,
TaShera Jenkins

Message from Mrs. Post….
Just a Reminder: TESORO DEL VALLE HAS GONE GREEN!
This week is Read Across America Week for our students and staff. PTA Chairperson, Mrs. Jennifer Spiker, has many wonderful activities planned all week for us. While it is a short week, the students and teachers will be writing short essays about why they love to read, participating in a reading contest, donating gently used or new books to classroom libraries, meeting a local librarian at broadcast, and dressing up as their favorite book character or author. Thank you to Mrs. Spiker who has organized this fun reading week!
Planning for the 2012-2013 School Year: Intent to Return forms are being sent home today with your child. It is important to know your plans for next year so that we can begin planning for next year's classes. Please return these forms by Thursday, March 1st. If you have friends or neighbors with a child turning 5 by November 1st, please invite them to stop by the Tesoro del Valle office between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to fill out forms for their incoming kindergartner. Thank you!
We welcome back from medical leave, Mrs. Janet Squires, and thank Mrs. Gail Joubert, who so willingly filled in for Mrs. Squires these past eight weeks. We welcome Mrs. Maria Borelli to Tesoro del Valle. Mrs. Borelli is our newest Campus Supervisor and has joined us since Mrs. Roberts retired. Mrs. Roberts has been “sighted” subbing and volunteering at Tesoro and it’s always a pleasure to see her.
Due to the budget constraints that we are experiencing in education in the state of California, our school board has taken action in the area of furlough days, early release, and minimum days. These changes in calendar will be explained in a letter coming from the district this week. Please be sure to make those changes on your calendars at home. This will also affect Parent Teacher Conference Week in March. Pupil free days and dismissal times will vary for several grade levels. Teachers will be scheduling their own conferences with you and will contact you themselves to make arrangements to meet with you. Thank you for your patience and support during this very difficult time in education.
The Saugus Union School District has several budget information meetings planned in March. A notice is being sent home with dates, times and locations today. I hope that you will attend one of these important meetings. One of the meetings will be here at Tesoro del Valle on Wednesday, March 14 at 6:00 p.m.
Congratulations to Brandon Polak, 6th grader, who is an accomplished gymnast. This past weekend he qualified for State Championships. Good luck and we are very proud of your accomplishments, Brandon!

Message from Mrs. Post….
Just a Reminder: TESORO DEL VALLE HAS GONE GREEN!
Last Thursday I heard from our California Distinguished Site Visit Team Leader and the date for the visit has been set. It will be Thursday, March 8th and we will be making preparations for the one-day visit. There will be 3-4 members of the team who will visit classrooms, interview parents and students, meet with teachers, visit classrooms, and review our application. It will be our opportunity to “brag” about our school and the successes we’ve had over the past seven years. Thank you again for your continued support of Tesoro del Valle programs, teachers/staff, and PTA! Together we can make a difference for our children!
We are at the mid year mark and our teachers are administering benchmark assessments for Language Arts and Math during the next two weeks. These assessments are administered several times throughout the year and provide important information to our teachers as they plan their instructional lessons. The “window” for these assessments begins February 22ndand continues through March 1st. The teachers will be able to share the results with you at Parent Teacher Conferences.
Kindergarten Round-Up begins next Monday, February 27th and we are looking forward to meeting our new kindergarten parents. If you have neighbors who have a kindergartner starting school next August, please let them know that registration is being held at Tesoro beginning next Monday and continuing all week. We are trying to get the word out so that we can plan for next year’s classes. Thank you.
The word of character for February is Caring and our teachers continue to hold class meetings to reinforce this important word of character. I’ve been giving examples of how to show you care for others at our Monday Broadcast. I’ve also reminded students that character is how you behave when no one is watching! I hope you will reinforce these ideas at home with your child/children as family discussions are important reinforcement to what is being learned here at school.
Reminder: Please use the valet line for drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon. Remember the parking lot is closed in the morning before school (with exceptions for awards assemblies and school business) and prior to dismissal in the afternoon. You, of course, are welcome to park in the lot during after school events, for parent teacher conferences, when picking up a sick child, etc. This rule is in place for the safety of all children. Thank you for being mindful of these times each day!

Congratulations! We received word from the California Dept. of Education on Wednesday, February 1st that our California Distinguished School application has been approved and we have advanced to the next step in the process, the site validation visit. Site visits will be scheduled between February 16th and March 23rd. Kudos and thanks to staff, students, and community. This is a well-deserved recognition.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your family! It’s a special day just to know that we care about each other so I hope that you will enjoy the day and evening letting family and friends know how much you care about them!
On the Saugus website you will find a new message from our Superintendent, Dr. Joan Lucid as well as a current budget report from our CBO, Cynthia Sheih. For her message click on Business and you will see a presentation.
I attended a recent Parent Advisory Council Meeting (PAC) last week and parent involvement was discussed. Those in the room agreed that we are fortunate to have so much parent involvement in our schools. One parent reminded us that parent involvement doesn’t always mean showing up for a meeting but does include: Parents help with reading at home and being a great role model by reading in front of your child; attending parent conferences, PTA events, school performances and awards assemblies; clipping box tops for education; volunteering from home and volunteering in class; making sure children come to school and get to school on time. We know that many parents can’t come to school to volunteer as they work full time or have little ones at home, but there are other ways that we appreciate your support and help. Thank you for all that you do to make our school and our children successful!
Again, I extend a huge thank you to Mrs. Karina Krynsky and all the volunteers on her Father Daughter dance committee. Wow! It truly was a night to remember for our girls and their dads/grandpas/special person in their life. Those parents who decorated turned the MPR into a Winter Wonderland. Watching the dads dance with their daughters was so touching and reminiscent for me as I recalled my dad dancing with me in our living room at home with the Big Band music in the background. The clean-up committee was wonderful as well and joined our night custodians, Emma and Eddie, as they got the room back into shape for school on Monday. Thank you to everyone for making this special night a memorable one!
Special thanks is extended to Mrs. Portia Guardado for not only her artistic designs as she provided face painting for our girls at the Father-Daughter Dance but also for doing such a fabulous job as the Enrichment Coordinator for the PTA After School Enrichment program. She makes sure that students find their classes and meet their parents when it’s time to go home. Thank you, Mrs. Guardado!
Coming home today is an invitation for parents to preview the film, “Just Around the Corner” that will be shown to fifth grade boys and girls (with parent permission of course). The letter explain the preview dates for parents only and provides three different evenings for the presentations. Hopefully, fifth grade parents will find one of the evenings convenient at one of the sites mentioned in the letter. Please look for the letter and if you do not receive it, please stop by the office for a copy.
ATTENDANCE
Please remember to call the office before 9:00 a.m. the morning that your student will be absent from school. The State of California requires a specific reason, "not feeling well" or "sick" are not acceptable. Please let us know if your child has a cold, is vomiting, is out of town, etc.
SIX FLAGS - READ TO SUCCEED
Our school is participating in the “Read to Succeed” program sponsored by Six Flags and Discovery Education. This program encourages children to read for fun and gives them an opportunity to earn a FREE admission ticket to Magic Mountain! Once at the BoxTops website, you find your favorite retail store, click on the link - that's all there is to it. No clipping involved! Our total earnings this school year is $2,166! Every BoxTop counts, whether you have clipped them off a box or done online shopping through boxtops4education.com. Let's increase those numbers and make a difference!
RALPH'S: Have you linked your Ralph's club card with our school yet? If not, please go to ralphs.com. Register your card and link to Tesoro del Valle Elementary through the Community Contribution Program. Every time a member shops for groceries and swipes their card, Tesoro automatically starts earning a rebate. You will see at the bottom of your receipt that a portion is being sent to Tesoro. Grandparents, friends, anyone can do this. You must re-register every September 1. It takes five minutes one time a year! So far we only have about ten people that have registered. Remember all money earned goes back to our children's school.

Recycle boxes are now in each classroom. Tesoro del Valle and SUSD are doing their part to recycle and help the environment. Waste Management has provided a separate bin and the Student Council officers and representatives will assist in collecting the paper from each classroom to recycle.
Thank you, Student Council for the beautiful display case. We now have a way to display awards, trophies, plaques, and photos. Thank you to Mrs. Ray, Mrs. Craigie and the Student Council officers and representatives for your very generous gift to the school.
Congratulations: Three of our students who have moved on to the SCV Council PTA level for the Reflections Contest that was held last October. In the area of Visual Arts: Tiffany Hyon, first grade, achieved Award of Excellence. In the area of Photography: Nicholas Hassler, first grade, received Award of Merit, and Sydney Bond, fifth grade, received Award of Merit. We are so proud of each of you! This year, the PTA has prepared a couple of very fun and educational assemblies for January and April. Also we worked with the COC PAC K-12 Arts outreach program and are able to present our students with a series of Art Workshops for every grade level.
Kindergarten will explore color formations with The Crayon Court on February 16th.
First grade will be able to create shadow puppets along with The Crayon Court on February 23rd.
Third grade will be playing Theatre Games with Aimee Hopkins on March 1st.
Exposure to the arts does wonders to the development of our children in school and out!
Parents, feel free to stop by on the day of your child’s workshop.

Post….
Thursday, February 2nd is Groundhog Day and I’m sure the folks back in the Midwest and on the east coast are very interested if Mr. Groundhog will see his shadow or not. Those of us on the west coast probably don’t mind the beautiful winter weather that we’ve been experiencing lately. This is of course a much loved tradition that has been enjoyed for many years! So, Happy Groundhog Day!
Recently, Mrs. Monica Roberts informed me that she planned to retire as of January 27th and we wish her the very best. Unfortunately, Mrs. Roberts was ill last week so the “send-off” that the staff and students had planned had to be postponed. We hope that Mrs. Roberts will join us in the next couple of weeks so that we can give her a “proper good-bye” and wish her well in her retirement. Thank you, Mrs. Roberts, for all that you have done for our Tesoro students and staff. We will miss you!
We’ve been back at school just two weeks and I am again hearing of parking lot concerns. Please remember to remain off your cell phone while driving on our campus (It is against the law to use a cell phone while driving.), remember to slow down while driving past a school and while driving on campus. Please use caution in the parking lot as cars are backing out and could be distracted. Pedestrians continue to disregard our request to use crosswalks rather than cutting through the parking lot. Again, I mention all of this as I am concerned about your child’s safety. Thank you!
Just a Reminder: TESORO DEL VALLE HAS GONE GREEN! Our newsletter can now be accessed through email. Thank you to Mrs. Tyrrell, Mrs. Acosta, Mrs. Smith and so many other parents who have encouraged and supported our efforts to go green. We know that it is not always easy to make changes, so please be patient as we strive to help our environment and be sure that our information reaches you!
Students must read a total of 6 hours (360 minutes) of recreational reading. Parents must initial each entry and sign the completed reading log to verify that the six hours of reading has been completed. Reading logs are due on or before February 16, 2012. Late entries will not be accepted. Tickets will be distributed in May and are valid for admission on select dates during the 2012 season. Happy Reading!
DISTRICT INFORMATION
School Accountability Report Card (SARC)
State law requires all public schools receiving state funding to prepare and distribute a SARC. The purpose of the report card is to provide parents and the community with important information about each public school. A SARC can be an effective way for a school to report on its progress in achieving goals. Summary copies of your school sites SARC will be available in your school office and online at www.saugus.k12.ca.us. If you have any questions relating to information in the SARC, please feel free to contact your school office or the Curriculum and Instruction Department at 661.294.5300, ext. 5140.
BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Priority Registration - School Age Program

If you are currently enrolled in the School Age Program and have a zero balance on your account, you may pick up 2012-2013 registration materials on Wednesday, February 8th. Kindergarten Round Up & Transitional Kindergarten (TK)
Kindergarten Round-up is a pre-registration time for the 2012-2013 school year. Your child must be five years old on or before November 1st, 2012. Children who turn five between November 2nd and December 2nd will be enrolled in Transitional Kindergarten “TK”. Transitional Kindergarten is the first of a two year Kindergarten experience. Message from Mrs. Post….
TESORO DEL VALLE HAS GONE GREEN!
January 23rd marked the beginning of the Chinese New Year! This is the year of the dragon. Students were sharing some of their traditions with me, and I hope to share those at a future broadcast. Happy New Year!
I recently attended a Parent Advisory Council meeting and some information regarding Transitional Kindergarten was shared for the upcoming year. New state law has changed the enrollment date for Kindergarten in California. This coming school year, students must turn five by November 1st. (Each year it will be moved back by one month until the September 1st date is reached.) Those children who turn five between November 1 and December 2, 2012 would be eligible for Transitional Kindergarten. Transitional Kindergarten (TK) would be funded by the state and is dependent on the Governor’s budget. If it is not funded, there will be no TK. We will continue to enroll students while we wait to see what the budget will include and that may not be decided until later in July or August. (We all know that traditionally the budget is not in place as of July 1st each year.) As you can imagine this delay makes our jobs planning that much more of a challenge. We will give you updates as we have more information.
We extend a big thank you to PTA and to our Programs Chairperson, Mrs. Maria Fenelon, for the TNT Dunk Squad Anti-Bullying assembly. The assembly was fun for our students and provided a very positive message in regards to our anti-bullying policy.
Our word of character this month is Fairness. Each week I provide examples of how students can show fairness here at school and at home. Teachers also include words of character within their classroom meetings. I hope that you will take the time to discuss this word/concept with your child perhaps during family dinnertime discussions.
We send get-well wishes to Mrs. Janet Squires, Tesoro’s librarian, who recently had surgery, and to Mrs. Marianne Smith, Speech Pathologist, who will be having surgery in the near future. If you or your child would like to send a card/note to either one, just drop it off in the office, and we’ll make sure that they receive your get-well wishes. In the meantime, Mrs. Gail Joubert will fill in for Mrs. Squires in the library and Mrs. Linda Luger, Speech Pathologist, will fill in for Mrs. Smith. Mrs. Luger will be here two days a week to provide services for our students receiving speech.
We extend special thanks to all our parent volunteers and those who have made donations to the classrooms and school. During these difficult financial times in education, your time and donations mean so much to all of us. Thank you! We appreciate your generosity. We would like to extend thanks this past week to Mrs. Sushinsky and Mrs. Park who were here for two days assisting with our Hearing Screening for K, 2nd, and 5th graders. Thank you for your help!
Please see the back page; I have included an article on how to help children understand autism. Research is now saying that autism is occurring in every one in every 110 children. I hope you find the article informative and helpful!

Message from Mrs. Post….
Welcome Back and Happy New Year! It is wonderful to see our students back after the long winter break! Our school calendar is tied to the Hart District’s calendar as many families have children in the elementary district as well as the Jr. High and High School district. Our teachers will be working to review material learned prior to break this week and then moving on to new standards/concepts in the coming weeks. You might want to review math facts, spelling lists, etc. this week with your child. It feels good to get back into the routine of school, doesn’t it!
We welcomed three new students on Tuesday. They are: Teah Guillen, grade 5; Jacob Tinajero, grade 4; and Jeremiah Ramirez, grade 3. Let’s work together to make them feel welcome!
Congratulations to Joan Romea, 4th grader, who entered the City of Santa Clarita Art on Canvas contest. Her artwork is just beautiful and she advanced to the city level. Congrats, Joan! We are proud of your accomplishments!
Our food pantries are probably low after the holidays. This month the PTA is collecting canned fruit, canned meat, and canned vegetables as part of the monthly food drive. The food collection supports Help the Children here in Santa Clarita. There are two barrels in the MPR near the PTA office and the food can be placed in those containers all month long. Thank you for helping to fight hunger in our valley. We appreciate all of Mrs. Susan Daymude’s work, as our PTA Food Drive Coordinator!
January Reading logs were handed out prior to vacation, so please encourage your child to keep reading and fill in those forms. We want each child to reach his/her reading goals each month. Additional reading logs are available in the school office. Please note: December reading logs are due to your child’s teacher this week!

CAFETERIA
Please remember to monitor your child/childrens meal account. The National School Lunch Program (Sponsored by the Federal Government) does not permit the cafeteria to extend credit (IOU’s).
We do not ever want a child to go without a meal, so the Cafeteria Staff will provide a meal to your child once and then will send a notice home indicating the amount owed and asking that you deposit money into your child’s account. The numerous IOU’s that are handed out daily create a lot of additional work for the Kitchen Staff. We appreciate your understanding and hope to alleviate some of the additional paperwork for our gracious Cafeteria Staff.

Message from Mrs. Post….
Reminder: Wednesday, December 21st will be a minimum day and dismissal will be at 12:35 p.m. that day. It is also Pajama Day! Students may wear their warm pajamas to school that day. It is the last day of school prior to Winter Break. This was chosen by the staff last August as the day to replace the minimum day usually set aside for Back to School Night. Since Back to School Night occurred prior to school opening, the minimum day became a “floating day”. It will be a busy and fun day with pajamas and special celebrations for the holidays! Please mark your calendars.
With next week being a short and busy week and realizing that the last thing everyone will be reading is my message in the newsletter, I’d like to take this time to wish all of our staff, students and families a very happy holiday season! Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Happy Kwanzaa! May the 2012 New Year bring peace and joy to you and your family! Happy New Year! School will reopen on Tuesday, January 17th!
Please note, I am sending home a monthly article from my Principals’ publication entitled, Tips on Gift-Giving and Receiving. I hope you find it has helpful and useful suggestions.
I’ve been asked by several staff members to once again ask that you use caution as you are walking and driving on school grounds. Last week we saw several near misses in our parking lot. Again, I will ask that you not walk through the parking lot but use the sidewalks and crosswalks to access our campus. Please keep in mind that the parking lot is closed at arrival time and dismissal time to further keep our students safe. Use the valet for dropping off and picking up your child. Thank you!
Reminder: There are lots of lost items in our Lost and Found. Please claim lost items by December 21st or they will be donated over Winter Break to a local organization. Lost and Found is located on the stage in the MPR. There are lots of jackets, sweatshirts, etc. on the Lost and Found rack.
SIX FLAGS - READ TO SUCCEED
Our school is participating in the “Read to Succeed” program sponsored by Six Flags and Discovery Education. This program encourages children to read for fun and gives them an opportunity to earn a FREE admission ticket to Magic Mountain!
ATTENDANCE
Please remember to call the office before 9:00 a.m. the morning that your student will be absent from school. The State of California requires a specific reason, "not feeling well" or "sick" are not acceptable. Please let us know if your child has a cold, is vomiting, is out of town, etc.
TOY DRIVE
This year the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department is collecting new toys for the Santa Clarita Valley Boys & Girls Club. If you would like to donate, please drop off a new unwrapped gift or gift card in the office. Please remember they are always in need of gifts for teenagers too.
Thank you, we sincerely appreciate you.
SPECIAL EDUCATION COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE (CAC)
The Santa Clarita Valley CAC is composed of volunteer parents, educators, and other interested community members who want to make a difference in the education of all children.
Your CAC seeks to join together parents, educators, lawmakers, service providers and others in our community with the goal of improving and protecting the education of our children with special needs. Your CAC is here to inform, empower, and support you.
We invite you to join us in our quest to help others in our community. The following workshop will be held at Bridgeport Elementary, 23670 Newhall Ranch Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91355:

YEARBOOK UPDATES
Volunteers needed - the yearbook needs volunteers during school events! Participation is easy as you attend our school events, please share and take a few extra pictures for yearbook consideration.

BOX TOPS
Friday, December 16th is the last day to turn in BoxTops for the current class contest. You can let neighbors, friends, and family know that you're collecting BoxTops for you school. When making purchases online, don't forget to go to boxtops4education.com first. Click on your favorite stores, and every purchase you make will earn our school BoxTops. You can print out Your Earnings page and send it in to your child's class, and those BoxTops will be counted towards the contest! So far there are nine confirmed shoppers online who have earned our school $116 - just by shopping online through BoxTops website!

Post….
Our school health office was quite a busy place on Monday. I know this is cold and flu season and that was quite evident all day Monday. I also know that our students don’t like missing school, but I encourage you to keep your child home when they are sick. I also realize that many times they are feeling fine in the morning when they leave for school and then begin feeling ill later in the morning. Please remember that a child needs to be temperature free for 24 hours (without medication) before returning to school. We really want our students here but not when they are running temperatures and not feeling well enough to be working and playing. If we all work together, we can cut down on the spread of the cold and flu among classmates and teachers. With all that said, get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, and stay healthy!
I would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Lorena Diana, Mr. Suey Tiengerd and their volunteers who worked to make the Holiday Boutique, Kids’ Corner, a success. This week long event enabled our students to shop for their parents, siblings, and friends. Thank you to everyone who assisted to make the Kids’ Corner possible this year!
The PTA and staff hope to see you at Restaurant Night tonight. Two local restaurants, Jersey Mike’s and Swirly’s, will be supporting our school and donating a portion of the evening to Tesoro. Thank you to the owners of Jersey Mike’s and Swirly’s for making tonight possible. Thank you to Mr. Fabian Diana for organizing our restaurant nights!
Congratulations to Blake Brauneisen on his recent success. He and his team, the SCVAA Bantam Aztecs won the 2011 Super Bowl Championship in football this past weekend beating Ventura 37-20 to take the title. Way to go, Blake!
Once again with these chilly mornings and windy days, I encourage our students to layer for warmth. Monday’s cold wind made for a chilly day. Please remind your child to wear a jacket, gloves, hat, etc. in the mornings.

Message from Mrs. Post….
After having turkey three days in a row, I was ready by Saturday for a juicy hamburger! How about you? Have you had it with turkey, turkey soup, turkey pot pie, etc.? I hope that you had a fun-filled family holiday. It was a bit difficult to watch the neighbors putting up holiday lights while it was 80 degrees and still November, but I decided to pull out some of the decorations. I just can’t bring myself to putting it up before it turns December. I guess I’m a traditionalist!
With all that said, it is just three and a half weeks until Winter Holiday! This time of year brings quite a bit of excitement for our students, but there is much to be accomplished. I hope you will try to keep continuity in schedules and routines for your child so that there is less disruption to the learning process. With vacation looming ahead, I am concerned with such a long winter break. Unfortunately, the holidays in December, holidays in January, and the Hart District schedule impacted our school schedule. During the break, I encourage you to have your child read, practice math facts (use educational games on the computer), practice typing skills (Tux Math available on the Internet), play spelling games (Spelling City), etc. It will help keep their skills from “taking a vacation”. You might also keep writing skills going by having your child write thank you notes to grandparents and relatives. That skill is somewhat of a “dying” tradition, but can reinforce writing skills and it’s a wonderful surprise to a grandparent to receive a thank you note from a grandchild!
Recently, the owner of Juice It Up! Terry McCleary, donated over 600 Juice It-Up! certificates to us. It provides students with a free juice or yogurt. Students are rewarded for classroom competitions, showing responsibility at school, reaching monthly reading goals, etc. With these certificates, we use them all year long. We extend a special Thank You to Mr. McCleary for helping support Tesoro del Valle School students.

Message from Mrs. Post….
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! The staff and I look forward to being with our family and friends over this holiday, too. We all have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Here at Tesoro we are thankful for our students and their families, our staff, our PTA and our Tesoro community. May this holiday give you food for your table, family and friends to share your feast, and good times to be shared together!
Last Thursday two of our three fifth grade classes attended a College of the Canyons workshop that showcased Improvisation in the Theater. (One other class is scheduled for an alternate date). I was able to sit in on one of the classes and found it to be educational and fun! Students were quite involved and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the workshop. Thank you to Mrs. Fenelon who has been able to arrange for COC Performing Arts to be a part of our school assembly program this year.
Recently, we have had some reports of children being dropped off in the parking lot in the morning. Please use the valet line or park on the street and use the crosswalks to access the campus. We’ve also received reports of discourteous drivers. Please model respect for our students when on the school campus.
I will send the new calendar of events for December home next Tuesday. Until that time, please watch the newsletter for Dates to Remember.

Message from Mrs. Post….
Our teachers are working on the application for the California Distinguished Award and while it is time consuming, it is an important process for our school to experience. The application is due at the end of November and as you well know, November is quite a busy month on the school calendar. I would like to thank our teachers who have volunteered to be part of the writing teams and thank all the teachers who have so willingly given their time at after school meetings. It’s never easy to be out of the classroom, and the teachers have asked to be out only during the afternoon hours to cause less of an impact to their classes. We are also fortunate to have our favorite substitute teachers available this month to help us out. So, keep us in your thoughts and we hope that we will be successful in our endeavors!
Report cards will be sent home with your child this Friday afternoon, November 18th. As I mentioned to students at Monday broadcast, report cards are not to be opened and shared in front of the school. These reports are private and should be shared between parent and student. Too often, siblings find themselves comparing each other’s grades and hurt feelings are a result. I hope that you will take individual time with each child to review his/her report card.
Remember to celebrate your child’s successes and set goals for those areas that show a need to improve.
We look forward to seeing you at Marston’s tonight. The PTA has scheduled an all day restaurant day with Marston’s (located in the Bridgeport Marketplace). We hope to see you there! We also extend a special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. McCardy, owners of Marston’s, for their donation of certificates for our students and teachers.
Next Tuesday, our sixth graders welcome Valencia High students to the Tesoro campus. The students will be working with our sixth graders in a program called STRIVE (Student Teaching Respect Inclusion Values and Equality). This program was developed to create a cultural awareness and acceptance of each other’s differences. Included in the presentation will be a discussion of what to do in situations that might include peer pressure, bullying, and prejudice. We are fortunate that Valencia High is once again able to bring this special workshop to our students! Thank you to the students and their teachers at Valencia High School.

Message from Mrs. Post….
Fifth graders going to Camp Pali arrived at camp at approximately 9:45 a.m. Monday morning. Thank you, parents, who worked so hard to get your child ready for camp and got here on time to board the buses at seven a.m. Their departure went smoothly as planned by our wonderful teachers, Mrs. Lisa Craigie, Mrs. Melisa Ray, and Mrs. Michelle White! We look forward to more emails and photos in the next few days and their return on Thursday afternoon.
Our Reflections Reception last Wednesday was a celebration of our students and their unique gifts in the areas of literature, music, dance, art and photography. I hope you had a chance to see the student work on display. Teachers were invited to take their classes through the MPR on Thursday and Friday to view the beautiful work of our Tesoro students. I would like to once again extend a thank you to Mrs. Maria Fenelon and Mrs. Portia Guardado who worked so hard on the PTA Reflections contest. My thanks, too, to Mr. Polio who created the beautiful banner displayed above the stage and to all the judges who so kindly agreed to judge the Reflections entries. We hope to have their names as well as the Reflections honorees that will represent our school at the PTA Council level in our bulletin next week.
The word of character this month is Responsibility. Yesterday at broadcast I reminded students that it was their responsibility to do homework and put it in their backpack so that they had it for the next day. While the younger students might need some assistance at first, they can be taught to be responsible for their own homework. I’m hoping that through the broadcast each Monday morning that I can make suggestions that the students will remember and will help you at home as well.
Congratulations are extended to Mrs. Michelle White who has been chosen to be Tesoro’s honoree for the Santa Clarita Teacher Tribute this year. Each year, teachers at each site nominate a fellow teacher to be honored by the Santa Clarita Valley Education Foundation. It is well deserved and we wish Mrs. White a year filled with much deserved honors. Mrs. White will be honored at the College of the Canyons along with all the other teachers from each school in the Santa Clarita Valley. This special evening will be held in the spring at the COC Performing Arts Center. Congrats, Mrs. White.
As you know the state of California continues to make cuts to funding for the schools and we wait for more budget cuts in the next few months. Each day your child is out of school, no matter for illness or other reasons, the school loses approximately $30.00. After a recent Administration Meeting, it is apparent that we all need to join together to be sure that our students are here at school each day unless ill. We do not want your child here if they are ill but we do encourage them to be here rather than going on family vacations, trips to amusement parks, etc. If we have ten students absent, the school will lose $300.00 for that school day. Many of you already know that doctor and dental appointments need not be a full day out of school. Thank you for bringing your child to school and making arrangements to bring them back so school is not missed. Anything you can do to help us avoid loss of school funding is very much appreciated.

Thank you, TaShera Jenkins

Message from Mrs. Post….
Last week was quite a week full of activities! Our chairperson for Red Ribbon Week, Mrs. Monique Loving, and I were talking this afternoon and we were quite excited with the children’s awareness and enthusiasm as they learned about the history of Red Ribbon Week and the importance of making good choices in life. Thank you to our DEA Agent, Taylor Lopresti and the agents who assisted at the assembly. Thank you to Sheriff’s Detective, Jeff Hoslet, and his partner, Jack (the search dog) who talked about good choices and allowed us to see his partner, Jack, in action.
Wow, the results are in and Jog-A-Thon has raised $33,500.00 for our school! Just amazing and we are so appreciative to parents, teachers, and students for their hard work in raising money for our school. We especially want to thank Mrs. Lisa Maloney, who has worked tirelessly for months in preparation. It takes so much time organizing the Jog-a-Thon and finding sponsors (all the t-shirts were given to students free through the donations by our sponsors). Thank you to all the volunteer parents who worked with Mrs. Maloney. It was the teamwork of all that made the difference. Students have earned three days of no homework, and your child’s teachers will let you know the days without homework.
I know that many of you were able to attend the PTA Fall Festival and had a great time. Again, thank you to Mrs. Karen Waterman and her parent volunteers! What a fun evening! It is amazing to see the team spirit, as these events are prepared from beginning to end. I was pleased to see that even at the end of the evening parents and students stayed to help the clean-up committee. Wow! I stopped to chat with the DJ who also stayed to play music, and he was so complimentary about our students and their families.
Thanks one and all!
Congratulations to Davis Cop, fifth grader, who was a member of the Wm. S. Hart Pony World Championship Baseball Team of Santa Clarita Valley. He and his team won the Mustang World Series in Texas this past summer. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recently honored the members of the team. Way to go, Davis!
We look forward to our Reflections Reception tonight at 6:00 p.m. in the MPR. Invitations to the participants have been sent home. I can’t wait to see the student work on display. See you at the reception! Thank you again, Mrs. Maria Fenelon and Mrs. Portia Guardado, for all your hard work on the PTA Reflections contest.
Our word of character for November is Responsibility. I hope that you and your child will discuss this important word of character. You might want to discuss what Responsibility means not only at school but also at home.

CAFETERIA
Reminder: Please remember to monitor your child/childrens meal account.

RED RIBBON WEEK
Red Ribbon Week was a fun and exciting week for the students. The students had an opportunity to decorate their doors with a drug free message, to learn about Enrique “KIKI” Camerena, to see Officer Jack in action, to participate in trivia questions and sidewalk chalk drawings, and to reflect on what Red Ribbon Week means to them. The message was very clear to them to make healthy choices and to live a drug free life.
I would like to personally thank each parent who participated in the preparation of this week’s activities as well as those who were present for its implementation. I could not have done it without you. I would also like to thank all of our wonderful teachers who also helped to make this week a success.

Message from Mrs. Post….
This is quite a busy week with the beginning of Red Ribbon Week, followed by Jog-a-Thon on Wednesday morning, and rounding out the week with the Fall Festival on Friday. Our PTA Volunteers go above and beyond and I’d like to acknowledge the Chairs for each of these events: Mrs. Monique Loving for Red Ribbon Week activities; Mrs. Lisa Maloney for Jog-a-thon; and Mrs. Karen Waterman for Fall Festival. Their organizational skills and enthusiasm are amazing. We thank all the volunteers on each of their committees who are helping make this week a success! Thank you one and all. Parents are all welcome to attend any and all of the events this week.
With Halloween coming soon, I’ve asked teachers to review Stranger-Danger rules in the classrooms. Please talk to your child at home as well. It’s a good time to review safety rules for children. Some recommendations you might want to emphasize:
*Do not go Trick or Treating alone. Travel in a group and with an adult. Do not enter a house to get candy.
*Take a flashlight along as you go Trick or Treating. Also take a whistle and a walking stick in case of a wild animal in the area. Carry a cell phone for emergencies.
*Do not talk with strangers and never ever approach a car you do not know. If someone in a car approaches you or follows you, run to the nearest house to get help!
*Never walk alone to and from school. Walk in pairs or groups of children and with an adult. Avoid waiting for parents in an area off campus where there are no adults to keep you safe.
*Do not be tricked into helping a “stranger” find a lost puppy/kitten.
*Do not open the door when home alone. Do not give information to a caller on the phone as to parents’ whereabouts. Teach your child what to do in an emergency. Try some role-playing so your child knows what to do in each situation.
Have a safe and Happy Halloween.
I’ve noticed some late arrivals recently while helping with the valet line. Remember the first bell rings at 8:10 a.m. and the bell at 8:15 a.m. signals the start of school. If your child arrives after the second bell at 8:15 a.m., he/she will need to go to the office and pick up a late pass. Let’s try and get to school on time! Remember the playground opens at 7:50 a.m. and the children do like to visit with friends before class or even get breakfast before school! Those can be incentives to get to school early! Also, we have been experiencing a considerable numbers of students in the office at the end of the day; please try to arrive on time to pick up your students.
Reminder to Slow Down: While I have jurisdiction in the school parking lot, the CHP officers can ticket those cars making illegal U-Turns in the street, cars parked in front of a driveway, and those going too fast on the streets around a school. Please be respectful of neighbors who live around our school and please, please slow down for the safety of all our children! Should you have a need to call the CHP to complain regarding illegal or unsafe activities on our streets, please call 661-244-5540 and you can register your complaint with the CHP.
Recently, it was suggested that in an effort to save on paper and time, we might look into an email service in order to send out the newsletter. We understand that while it is available on the school website, it is easier to open an email attachment. In the coming weeks, we would like to try emailing the newsletter through the classroom teacher’s email. This is just a trial run to see how we like the process and then we can decide if it’s worth the cost of the email service. In the coming weeks, you will receive a copy of the newsletter via email and also a hard copy sent home with your child. You should get only one copy as it goes to the youngest child or only child. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are receiving more than one hard copy of the newsletter. Thank you!
We had some very sad news, last Sunday, Eilsey, the 3 year old granddaughter of our District Nurse, Gail Winter, passed away suddenly. Our hearts and prayers go out to Gail, her husband Randy, and Eilsey's parents Scott and Steph.

Did you know that the National PTA chooses the Reflections theme every year out of children's suggestions?
If you have a theme idea you can summit it, if it gets chosen you could win $100. Go to: http://www.teacherweb.com/CA/TesorodelvalleElementary/TesorodelVallePTA/apt9.aspx , download the form and send it in.

Post….
I had some very exciting news over the weekend! I am delighted to report that Tesoro del Valle is eligible to apply for the California Distinguished School Award. This is a great honor and a tribute to our staff in gaining eligibility. This next month will be important for the teachers and me as we complete the lengthy application. As I told our students this morning at broadcast, this is the Academy Award-the Oscars for schools, and while many schools are eligible, not all can be chosen. Criteria for completing the application are extensive, and the final choice is based on a rubric that educators from around the state of California use to judge the applications. Wish us well as we begin our journey!
Have you heard? Library is open, and we have many new books available that have been acquired through donations from the PTA and other sources. Mrs. Janet Squires is our librarian and is always delighted to have parents who would like to volunteer in the library. Just drop by for a visit and check out the books available for adults as well!
Speaking of our PTA…..Did you know that through funds raised last year in the Jog-a-Thon, the PTA is able to help fund our Music and PE (Physical Education) programs here at Tesoro. Wow! In this budgetary crisis in education, your support of PTA is so appreciated. They have funded the My Access writing program for the entire fifth grade class. This is the program that the students used with their netbooks last year in 4th grade. The cost is $15.00 per student and provides continuity for our students and teachers. We’ve seen wonderful results with this writing program! Thank you to all who support our PTA!
This is National Bully Awareness Month and we continue to work within our Caring Schools program to stamp out bullying on our campus, in our neighborhood, and in our community. Our teachers continue to work with students through class meetings and class activities to provide our students with information and strategies to combat bully situations they may encounter. Mrs. Marianne Smith and Mrs. Kim Farr are Tesoro’s Bully Prevention/Conflict Resolution Coordinators who work with teachers and students as issues or concerns arise. Mrs. Megan Conley is our Coordinator for Caring Schools, our Character Education Program. Through this program teachers are working with students to promote good character. When you hear about class meetings, buddy activities between grade levels, homeside activities, you are hearing about activities promoted by our Caring Schools Program. This is a district wide program and is being taught at all our schools in the Saugus District.
COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS
College of the Canyons Physics and Astronomy faculty member David Michaels invites you to join him for a “Star Party” on Friday, October 21st, at 7:30 p.m. (weather permitting). Plan to view a possible comet, meteor shower, Jupiter and its moons and many other wonders. This event is free to the public.
ATTENDANCE

Message from Mrs. Post….
Change of date: The Primary Intervention Program Open House has been postponed. Invitations will be sent home once a new date has been established.
Welcome back after a week of Fall Break. It did feel like fall for a while last week and now we expect triple digits by Thursday! I hope our students had some special family time and enjoyed a week free from school obligations! I just hope that with a week off, they were able to do some of their reading for enjoyment. Let’s get them participating in the Pizza Hut Reading Program that has just begun as of this month.
Thank you to our men and women from the Elks Lodge. They donated dictionaries to our third grade students once again this year. This is a community project that the Elks Lodge members participate in every year and make sure that every third grader in the Santa Clarita Valley has a current school dictionary. Thank you to these dedicated men and women!
The last day of school prior to Fall Break, our sixth graders participated in College of the Canyons Performing Arts Center’s ‘Rock the Rhythm: Beat the Odds’ program. This is an interactive drumming program, entitled Beat the Odds, which was developed through a UCLA study. Beat the Odds integrates activities from contemporary drum circles and working with groups to teach skills in focusing, listening, team building, positive risk taking, self-esteem, awareness of others, leadership, expressing feelings, empathy, etc. Each of the sixth grade classes had a separate assembly and had their own drum. One of the activities included telling about a favorite food, favorite color, and favorite animal. This was all set to the beat of the drum. I was able to participate in one of the assemblies and had fun working with our sixth graders as well as learning so much more about them. The plan for the next few months is for the program to be introduced to every 6th and 7th grade class in the Santa Clarita Valley, culminating in a drum circle to take place on Friday, May 18, 2012, at College of the Canyons’ Cougar Stadium. Stay tuned for more information regarding this important event.
Congratulations to Brandon Polak, sixth grader, who is a gymnast and has recently qualified for the National competition at the Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs in November. Way to go, Brandon! Our very best wishes to you as you prepare for this great event!
***If you experienced some difficulty calling school yesterday, it was due to technical difficulty. We also experienced difficulty with the system. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Message from Mrs. Post….
I am still amazed with the Tesoro del Valle school spirit that I observed/experienced the past few weeks! The participation and turnout of parents and students for Book Fair, Restaurant Night, PTA Association meeting, PTA Membership drive, Jog-a-Thon sponsorships, etc. have been heart-warming to say the least. Thank you to each and every one who volunteers to support our school as well as all of those who participate and “write those checks”. This school year is off to a great start!
Congratulations to our Student Council Officers for the 2011-2012 school year. They are: Emmi Payne, President; Sydney Craigie, Vice-President; Anneliese Breidsprecher, Secretary; Treasurer, Sabrina Acosta; Andrew Nance, Parliamentarian; Shantanu Jhaveri, Sports Equipment Director. Each of the candidates (33 in all) did a marvelous job throughout the campaign. I am proud of each and every one of them. Thank you to everyone who participated in the recent election process. I encourage students who would like to pursue their leadership skills to try out to be a Student Council representative for their class.
This week is a full week of school with no minimum days. We officially begin Fall Break at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30th. School wil not be in session the week of October 3-7. School resumes on Monday, October 10th at 8:15 a.m. I hope that students and teachers will enjoy a well- deserved week of vacation and want to wish all observers of Rosh Hashanah a blessed holiday. I am encouraging students to read for enjoyment over the break and possibly take some trips to museums, the library, etc. Have a safe and fun Fall Break!
Safety Reminder: Once again we’ve had some scary encounters in the parking lot at arrival and dismissal times. I encourage parents and students to use the crosswalks at the driveway to access the crosswalks to walk on the sidewalk as you enter and leave campus. Please, for the safety of your children, do not walk them through the parking lot.

Message from Mrs. Post….
We are delighted to see so many parents during this conference week. Keep in mind that the schedule is a bit different due to a Pupil Free Day on Wednesday and Minimum days on Thursday and Friday. Minimum day dismissal is at 12:35 p.m. Be sure and pack a nice big snack for your child on Thursday and Friday as there is no lunchtime on minimum days. Please remember that the parking lot is closed at dismissal time for safety of our children. We encourage you to use the valet line. Monday’s dismissal of over 600 students took just 16 minutes to clear the valet line! I extend a special thank you to our teachers and office staff who assist in the dismissal especially on such hot days.
I’d like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Brauneisen and her volunteer parents for all the organization and assistance on Picture Day! Life Touch finished all the photos well before lunchtime. They had three cameras that day and the lines moved quickly! Don’t forget Spirit Wear is on sale this week. Again, thank you to Mrs. Brauneisen for coordinating spirit wear. The t-shirt variety is just great!
This week is the PTA Mrs. Nelson’s Book Fair in our library! The library is just beautiful with new books to purchase, and I’d like to thank Mrs. Monique Seitz and her volunteers as they’ve worked so hard to put the displays all together. Book Fair is open each day from 8:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (except Wednesday), and classes will be visiting the book fair on their designated day. Friday, the book fair will close at 1:15 p.m.
Mark your calendars: This Thursday is PTA Restaurant Night at Coldstone Creamery, and the fun begins at 12:30 and ends at 7:30 p.m. Coldstone is located on McBean right across from the Post Office and near Pavilions. We hope to see you there!

As you may recall, the PTA is collecting games and activities to help your children through a potentially long and difficult wait for their parents after an emergency. Please send in copies or print-outs of activities that your child would like to do, such as dot-to-dot’s, Mad Libs, Sudoku, word searches and coloring pages. The websites listed below are some of many that provide these printable activities for free, including:

Keep those BoxTops coming in. Our contest ends on September 30th.
Another way to earn BoxTops: Start every online shopping trip at the Box Tops Marketplace. A great way for our school to earn BoxTops is to shop online through the BoxTops website. Message from Mrs. Post….
This weekend was particularly somber with the ten-year remembrance of the disasters on September 11, 2001. I do want to say thank you to Mrs. Conley and her committee as well as the Boy Scout Color Guard, Lt. Colonel Ethan Goldberg, the first grade teachers and their first graders who sang and made flags, the sixth graders who read poems and essays, the Girl Scouts from Troop 3472, and Mrs. Faulkner. Mrs. Conley and her committee put together a very touching ceremony to salute the heroes in our lives and to remember those who lost their lives in the events ten years ago. Thank you to the many parents and grandparents who attended the ceremony as well. It was wonderful to see you and have you be a part of the day. The wonderful essays and poems are being compiled in a notebook in the office so that they can be shared in the years to come.
Parent Teacher Conferences begin next week, and the teachers and I have tried to put together a conference schedule that will work for everyone. We scheduled conferences “back to back” for those families with more than one child in school as well. Please RSVP by the end of this week, so that teachers can finalize their schedules. Be sure and think about what questions you might have for your
child’s teacher and what goals you might have for your child this year. You might want to write down questions and goals as you prepare for your conference. Should you need to cancel and
reschedule a conference; please call the office so we might alert the teacher. If you call after 4:00 p.m. and the office is closed, please use our automated system to reach your child’s classroom teacher.
On Tuesday, September 6th, a bat was found on an upper wall of the two-story building. Our custodial staff contained the bat and contacted the County Animal Control Department who removed the animal from our campus. At no time were any students exposed to the bat as it was discovered high up on the exterior wall of the two-story building well out of reach of children. On Friday, September 9th, we received notification from the County that the bat tested positive for rabies. This is not an uncommon occurrence as several bats found in our valley recently have tested positive for the disease. It is very important that parents remind their children to stay clear of bats in order to protect themselves. If bats are found in the neighborhood, please contact the Castaic Animal Control immediately at 661-257-3191. Never approach a bat or attempt to handle it. For more information on bats, contact the Castaic Animal Control.
Music classes for Kindergarten through sixth grade begin this week. Classes will be held in Room 23 and Mrs. Michele Boron is back again this year to teach music for us. Thank you to the PTA for funding these classes through money raised last year during fundraising events and Jog-a-Thon!
We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Janie Faris returning in the Primary Intervention Program (PIP) and Mr. Mike Mann returning in the Children of Divorce Intervention Program (CODIP). This program is funded through a grant for three years and is specifically for Kindergarten through Third Grade.
The PIP Program is an award winning K – 3rd grade curriculum in place at this school site, which helps general education children work through shyness, making friendships, some personal losses, being new to school, and other mild “school adjustment” issues. This is done by children engaging with a caring adult SUSD employee child aide in the playroom, through play – which is a child’s best form of expression.
The CODIP program is another award winning K-3rd grade program in place at this site. This is simply a peer support group for general education students managed by a specially trained child aide, to normalize the idea of divorce/separation. It brings together students who are age appropriate peers, whose families are going through similar situations, so the students know they are not alone.
VISION SCREENING
Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 14th, our Kindergartners, 2nd and 5th Graders will have their vision checked. Should your child have any difficulties through the screening, you will be notified via U.S. Mail in just a few days. No news is good news.
STUDENT RELEASE PROCEDURES
Please look for the brochures coming home today explaining the Student Release Procedure. These brochures contain valuable information and we recommend that you keep them in the vehicles that are used to transport your children.
ATTENDANCE
Please remember to call the office before 9:00 a.m. the morning that your student will be absent from school. The State of California requires a specific reason, "not feeling well" or "sick" are not acceptable. Please let us know if your child has a cold, is vomiting, is out of town, etc.
LIBRARY NEWS FROM MRS. SQUIRES
Library friends can be found in surprising places. We'd like to send a very special "Thank You" to Lauren Cabot, Justine Cabot, Alexandra Voets and Emily McCardy for their recent gift to our Library Fund. These terrific young ladies donated the profits raised from their lemonade and cookie sale to help support our library. What a lovely example of generosity and thoughtfulness.
