Message from Mrs. Post….
We have now completed four full days of school and as happens many times, the heat has been turned on in our lovely valley. Just when our students were enjoying being outside with their friends and playing tetherball, four square, volleyball, handball, etc., the heat starts. Hopefully, it will be a short heat spell. In the meantime, students are inside for quiet games and eat lunch in the air-conditioned MPR. Monday was the first day of this routine and our students did fairly well adjusting to it. As we always do, we monitor the weather and air quality through our district and have guidelines for our recess and lunch recess.
I’d like to say thank you to all of our parents who use valet in the morning and afternoons. We’ve added in the Kindergarten drop-off and pick-up so it took some adjustments and we continue to monitor the process. As the Kindergarten line finishes, I have started routing 1st and 2nd grade parents up through the upper parking lot near Childcare so that we can move more cars off the street. I have my custodians helping so please follow their instructions. Thank you and I know things will go faster and smoother as we all get used to the new procedures.
Our next challenge is the Minimum Day on Thursday for Back to School Night. Kindergarten will be dismissed at 12:20 p.m. with grades 1-6 at 12:35 p.m. Parents of students in grades 1-6, please try and arrive after 12:30 p.m. so we can dismiss Kindergarten first. If parents come too early for the later 12:35 p.m. dismissal, there will be more congestion. Again, your patience is much appreciated!
Thank you to Mrs. Ford, PTA volunteer parents, and valet students from last year. Our valet in the morning is going well and a new training for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students will be on Friday, September 3rd with Deputy Shoemaker. More information will be sent home in a flyer later this month.
Our phones have not been working as of Monday. We’ve received reports that while some calls did go through, at other times; the phone rang and rang with no one answering them. This has been reported to our IT department and our district. The IT department came out Monday afternoon to work on them but the system is now older and the district is replacing the system for the entire district. We will keep you updated on changes as the system is replaced.
Back to School Night is Thursday, August 19th at 6:30 p.m. Please go directly to classrooms that evening and a short broadcast will begin followed by presentations by your child’s teacher. There will be two sessions (both the same information) and so if you have more than one child in school, you will be able to attend at least two sessions. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday evening. There is no playground supervision and this night is set-aside for parents only.
Parking for Back to School Night: We will try to get as many cars in our lots as possible. We will need parking for staff but after that we will use the rest of the large lot, the Childcare lot, and the lot near the lunch area. After that, our custodians will be out there to direct you in parking along the curb where valet usually is located. We need to have the left lane open for through traffic, emergency vehicles, etc. Thank you!
Parents, we do need your help in the morning. We ask that children come to the playground through the single gate at the lunch area. Students will be directed to that gate as they exit their car in valet. If you are walking your child to the gate, please do not accompany them onto the yard. Our Campus Supervisors are there to supervise beginning at 7:50 a.m. With parents on the yard, it makes supervision more difficult. If you would like to visit the yard in the morning, you will need to sign in at the office and pick up a pass. Thank you for your help.
I’ve also been asked to remind everyone that the parking lot does have certain spaces designated for staff, district nurse, visitors, PTA President etc. These people come and go during the day and may leave campus for a short while only to return and find someone in their space. If you are parking in the lot due to school business and the visitor spaces are filled, please go to the far end as you will find many more spaces available. Thank you!
STAR Results are being sent home today. The staff and I were delighted to see such wonderful results from our students last May. We look forward to seeing the API (Academic Performance Index) score that will be due out in early September. Congratulations and thanks to our teachers and students for all their hard work last year. They have demonstrated outstanding achievement, and we move closer to the goal of all students achieving Proficient or Advanced as mandated in the No Child Left Behind Act.
PTA NEWS
BOOK FAIR
It's that time of year again...we will be holding our 6th annual Mrs. Nelson's Book Fair. The book fair will be held Monday, August 23rd thru Friday, August 27th. A schedule with times and more information will go home with your children. We are in need of volunteers so if you can help out please call Monique Seitz at 661-294-2600 ext. 195. Thank you for supporting our school's book fair.
FUNDRAISING – JOG-A-THON
Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! I have some exciting news to share! Due to the success of last year’s jog-a-thon, it will be our ONLY FUNDRAISING EFFORT this school year but we will have to cover our PTA expenses. Are you aware the PTA funds field trips, school assemblies, the P.E. teacher, some computer software & hardware, as well as several other school events like Fall Festival, Health Week, Mother/Son-Father/Daughter outings, Teacher Appreciation, etc.?
The jog-a-thon will be held October 20th. Our immediate need is to find corporate partners. Can your business donate $250, $500, $1,000 or more towards our event? It is tax-deductible and the corporate logo will be on the back of over 700 t-shirts, on a banner in front of our school and publicly recognized in the newsletter & website. Interested businesses, please contact Lisa Maloney ASAP at lmaloney1@att.net.
Thank you everyone!
