Message from Mrs. Post….

STAR Testing continues through the end of this week. Grades 4 and 6 finish testing on Tuesday while grades 2, 3, and 5 finish on Thursday. Those students who need to makeup tests will complete their testing on Friday this week, or Monday next week. Testing will be packed up and sent to the district office on Tuesday, May 18th.  Our students and teachers have done a great job preparing all year, and I’m sure our students are doing their best each day. Results will be sent home in August (mailed to former 6th graders).

The first grade program, “A Habitat is a Home” was a delightful performance by our first grade classes. Thank you to the first grade students and their teachers (Mrs. Kirk, Mrs. Palomino, Mrs. Henry, Mrs. Grosh, and Mrs. Conley) who worked so hard to help their children prepare for this educational and entertaining performance.

The staff and I would like to reward all our Tesoro Tigers for their outstanding efforts to raise money for technology through the Jog-a-Thon. We’ve decided that a Movie Matinee on Friday, May 21st would be a fun treat for them. Our teachers will be choosing an appropriate G rated movie for their students. Congratulations and again, thank you to all our students

and their parents for helping with the recent fundraiser for our school.

Congratulations to our recent Math Honors students in 6th grade: Peter Christiansen, Bryan Kim, Andy Jung, Connor Lewis, Noelle Min, Jaylan Smith, and Akshay Trisal. The sixth grade math honors exam is quite comprehensive. These students will be receiving an invitation to the District Awards Night to be held at Bridgeport Elementary on Tuesday, May 18th at 7:00 p.m.

Reminder: Sixth grade parents and students are invited to Rio Norte this Thursday evening for the Rio Norte Round-Up from 5-8:00 p.m. What a great opportunity to visit and see your new school for next year!

Reminder: This Friday, May 14th is a minimum day and dismissal is at 12:45 p.m. for students in grades 1-6. AM and PM Kindergartners will attend in the morning with dismissal at 11:35 a.m.

Friday, May 14th is our final PTA assembly of the year. Performances will be at 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.  The assembly is called, Dos Amigos, Two Friends! As always, parents are welcome to attend. Thank you to our PTA for funding all the assemblies this year. They’ve been not only fun but educational! Thank you again, Mrs. Howard and Mrs. Loving.

HERO POSTERS CALENDAR

After watching a Bully Prevention assembly, our students created Hero Posters.  14 posters were selected and made into a calendar.  These calendars can be purchased for $2.00 (cash only) each until May 14, 2010.  The calendars begin with the month of June 2010.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

It’s time to send another batch of Box Tops to General Mills.  Please send those small pieces of paper to school.  Some of them have 6/1/10 expiration, so we need to get those mailed in to the company.  During the first half of the school year, those tiny pieces of trash earned our school $339.80.  Every Box Top helps.

Thank you for taking the time to rip those Box Tops off the products, collect them, and send them to school.  Your participation in this program makes a difference.

PTA NEWS

FRIDAY IS SPIRIT DAY

Show your Tesoro spirit!  Wear your cool t-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts and skorts each Friday!

DRINK POUCH BRIDGADE

Did you know that all of those drink pouches that our children consume (like Capri Sun, Kool-Aid, etc.) can be recycled?  They can!  So start saving your empty drink pouches because Tesoro has joined the Drink Pouch Brigade!  Simply remove the straw and remaining liquid, flatten the pouch, and send them to school with your student through the rest of the year.  Let's do our part to keep these drink pouches out of our landfills and make a little money ($0.02 per pouch) for our school!

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

Let's celebrate our community's diversity!  On Friday, June 4th, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., the PTA will host our International Festival.  Join the fun as we spotlight different cultures through dance, music, and food.  Students in each grade level will be performing a specific ethnic folk dance taught during their P.E. class at school.  These student dances will be the opening act for the festival.  We will be offering "A Taste of the World" in which you can purchase cultural foods from our local restaurants.  In addition, we will have an "International Cafe" where families can bring homemade or store bought desserts from their culture to share with others.  We will have a professional Hollywood dance troop perform and, to complete the evening, a DJ for our "World Groove" where families can dance to contemporary, international music.  If you would like to be a part of this exciting event, please contact Lisa Bomben at mamalisa@ca.rr.com

FOOD DRIVE

This is our last month for the food drive.  Let’s make an extra effort this month to fill the bins as our local food pantry will have fewer donations as the schools close down for the summer.  We will be collecting peanut butter, jelly and juice boxes for the month of May.

Thank you.
