Message from Mrs. Post….

STAR Testing begins on Wednesday, May 5th and continues through next week. As we’ve told our students, these tests are a measure of what you’ve learned this year and it would be impossible to study for these tests. This week testing will take place on Wednesday and Thursday but not on Friday. Next week testing continues through Thursday with make-ups through the 17th. Testing will begin at 8:30 a.m. and be concluded by recess time. Should your child be ill, please do not send him/her to school. They will have time to make up a test if it’s prior to May 17th.  If a child is tardy and testing has started in his/her class, he/she will be asked to wait in the office until after the testing is over that day. He/she will then need to make-up the test at a later date.

Student Council held a STAR Pep Rally last Friday and each grade level participated with their own cheer to encourage students to be a “PAWS-itive” Test Taker. Each cheer was clever and fun. It gave students an opportunity to share some good test taking tips to remember. You might have seen the “goodie” bags sent home for students as well. Thank you to our Student Council for preparing all these fun activities and “goodie bags”.

Today is Teacher Appreciation Day and we honor our wonderful teachers here at Tesoro del Valle as well as all teachers around our nation (National Day of the Teacher). I hope you and your child will take some time today to thank a teacher who has made a difference for your. Thank you to our PTA volunteers who treated our teachers and staff to a special breakfast and luncheon today.

The Tesoro staff and I wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all our moms and grandmas. How thankful we are to all of you for your love and guidance each and every day. While some of our moms are no longer with us, they will always be in our minds and hearts as we remember them each day! Hugs to each of you for always being there!

I would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Lisa Maloney, room parents, and parent volunteers for all their hard work and enthusiasm in making the Jog-a-Thon a huge success last Wednesday morning. At last count, the PTA has raised over $17,500.00 from this fun event. Thank you to everyone who participated in organizing, running, cheering, etc. We all had a wonderful time!

Last Wednesday morning was a bit chaotic as we hurried to school to find out if the Jog-a-Thon might be cancelled due to the overnight escape from the jail to the north of us. The Sherrif’s Department was fantastic in keeping the district and us informed as to what we needed to do and what activities could happen. The situation was monitored throughout the day, and we received emails and school visits from both the Sheriff’s Department and our district Safety and Risk Management Director, Keith Karzin. It was very reassuring to have a patrol car and officer visible either in our lot or on the street in front of our school. We are very appreciative to the Tesoro del Valle parents who are part of the SCV Sheriff’s Department as they watch over Tesoro del Valle School and Community. Thank you, Sheriff Deputies for keeping us safe!

INTRA-DISTRICT TRANSFERS

All Intra-District transfer requests (including Bouquet Canyon and Emblem Schools) will be considered final as of June 1, 2010.  Students who have requested more than one school and have not selected one will be assigned to their home school area.  Students wishing to return to their home school area after June 1, 2010 may do so based on space availability only.  They may be referred to other schools for the 2010-11 school year if space is unavailable at the requested grade level.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURE

Please be sure to call the office the morning that your student will be absent from school.  Be specific!  "Not feeling well" or "sick" are not acceptable excuses to the State of California.  Please let us know if your student has a cold, is vomiting, is out of town, etc.

Thank you,
Sue Guinn

FRIDAY IS SPIRIT DAY

Show your Tesoro spirit!  Wear your cool t-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts and skorts each Friday!

DRINK POUCH BRIDGADE

Did you know that all of those drink pouches that our children consume (like Capri Sun, Kool-Aid, etc.) can be recycled?  They can!  So start saving your empty drink pouches because Tesoro has joined the Drink Pouch Brigade!  Simply remove the straw and remaining liquid, flatten the pouch, and send them to school with your student starting the week of April 19th through the rest of the year.  Let's do our part to keep these drink pouches out of our landfills and make a little money ($0.02 per pouch) for our school!

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

Let's celebrate our community's diversity!  On Friday, June 4th, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., the PTA will host our International Festival.  Join the fun as we spotlight different cultures through dance, music, and food.  Students in each grade level will be performing a specific ethnic folk dance taught during their P.E. class at school.  These student dances will be the opening act for the festival.  We will be offering "A Taste of the World" in which you can purchase cultural foods from our local restaurants.  In addition, we will have an "International Cafe" where families can bring homemade or store bought desserts from their culture to share with others.  We will have a professional Hollywood dance troop perform and, to complete the evening, a DJ for our "World Groove" where families can dance to comtemporary, international music.  If you would like to be a part of this exciting event, please contact Lisa Bomben at mamalisa@ca.rr.com.

FOOD DRIVE

Our food items for April:  Cereal, oatmeal or canned fruit.
