Message from Mrs. Post….

With the recent disaster in Haiti, I know many of you are concerned and wondering how you can help. First of all, our PTA will be working with many PTAs throughout our valley to collect funds for the American Red Cross. (Many of you will remember that a few years ago our PTA collected donations for victims of the tsunami. Checks were written to the Red Cross, and these were presented to a Red Cross representative at a school board meeting.) More information will be coming to you later this week via a flyer. As you can imagine, the need is great for medical care, medicine, food, water, clothing, shelter materials, etc. As soon as we have a flyer prepared, we can start accepting checks made to the American Red Cross. I thank our PTA in advance for their efforts in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Mrs. Erika Yamasaki, our PTA President, has alerted me that the Sport Chalet is collecting “gently worn” shoes for Haitian Relief. You can go to the following weblink for more info: sportchalet.com/category/soles+4+souls+and+sport+chalet.do. This donation program will continue until Sunday, January 31st. They are accepting men’s, women’s, and children’s shoes. Please take your donated shoes to any Sports Chalet store. There is a Sports Chalet located on the Old Road in Stevenson Ranch (same shopping center as Staples, Toys R Us and Wal-Mart.

This week looks like we will be on Rainy Day Schedule all week. Should we get a break in the weather and the blacktop is free of puddles, we will allow students outside, but I doubt that will happen this week. The forecast is not looking too promising. Please remind your child/children to dress in layers and be sure and wear a coat (I reminded many students to put their hoods up as they complained about the sprinkles as they walked to and from lunch.) The rain seems to blow sideways at times and even our umbrellas aren’t able to keep us dry. Our valet line is longer due to inclement weather so please be patient and we will try and keep things moving. Please remember to remain in your car, and we will bring your child to you. Please do not get out of your car to load backpacks or children as this delays the valet line. Try and allow extra time for arrival and dismissal times due to the longer valet line and additional time it takes getting children to their cars. Thank you!

Thank you to our PTA for bringing Laser Mania to our K-6 grade students. Our thanks go to Mrs. Howard and Mrs. Loving for all the wonderful programs this year and for rescheduling this particular assembly. Coordinating these assemblies is very time consuming, and they are always looking for educational experiences for our students.

SITE COUNCIL MEETING

The next Site Council Meeting is Wednesday, January 27th at 3:45 p.m. in the Staff Lounge.  These meetings are open to the community.  The agenda will be posted in the marquee 72 hours in advance.

REMINDER:   Please remember to check in at the office whenever you are on campus and to please wait outside the gate at dismissal time.

Thank you for your cooperation!

SAVE THE DATE!!!!  PTA RESTAURANT NIGHT

McTeacher night is on Thursday, January 28th, from 4 – 8 p.m. at the McDonalds in the Pavilions parking lot.  Come out to support our school and have a bite to eat served up by our very own Tesoro teachers!  More information to follow.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

ENRICHMENT CLASSES

Due to low enrollment there is a date change for the Movies by Kids classes.  The "My First Music Video" & “Clay Animation" classes are now going to begin on January 26th  and will end on March 9th.  PARENTS: this gives you until Friday, January 22nd, to enroll your student(s) so please send your enrollments in this week or go online to www.moviesbykids.com to register there.

Also, there is still room in the Wednesday 1st-6th grade drum classes, a.m. kindergarten and 1-2nd grade Incredible Edible Geography classes, and Thursday 1st-6th grade Hip Hop and a.m. kindergarten Art and Music classes.  The 3rd-6th grade Geography class and both p.m. kindergarten classes have been cancelled due to low enrollment.  Both kindergarten classes that begin at 11:45 will still be held.

We are excited about a new ASE teacher, Anna Huff, currently working professionally in the art field, who will be teaching the a.m. kindergarten Art and Music class on Thursdays.  She was a graduate of and teacher at Cal Arts.  She has been teaching visual and media arts to adults and children for over a decade.  She currently teaches classes at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena and four years ago participated in their intensive arts pedagogy fellowship program.  Art and Music is a very creative class combining art projects (instruments), song creation and playing music together.

We are looking forward to a great winter session!

SCIENCE FAIR

In the spring, PTA traditionally organizes a school-wide science fair.  We currently do not have a chairperson, and subsequently may not be able to sponsor this popular event.  If you would be willing to chair the science fair or are able to help organize it, please contact me ASAP.  Thank you!

YEARBOOK PRE-SALE IS COMING!

It's that time of year again.

Yearbook pre-sales will begin on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 and end on Friday, February 26, 2010.  The pre-sale price will be $22.00 per book. Please look for flyers coming home soon!

 SIXTH GRADE PARENTS

Please fill out the Rio Norte Pre-Registration Information forms and return them to Tesoro no later than February 5, 2010.

The Rio Norte Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is looking for parents who are interested in holding an office or chair position on the Executive Board.  Positions do not require a lot of your time and meetings are monthly.  This is a great opportunity to be "in the loop" with school information.  For more information, please contact Lisa Bomben at mamalisa@ca.rr.com.

FOOD DRIVE

Food items for January:  Canned chili, canned vegetables (other than green beans and corn) or crackers.

Thank you.
