Message from Mrs. Post….
Welcome Back and Happy New Year! It is wonderful to see our students back after the long winter break! Our school calendar is tied to the Hart District’s calendar as many families have children in the elementary district as well as the Jr. High and High School district. Our teachers will be working to review material learned prior to break this week and then moving on to new standards/concepts in the coming weeks. You might want to review math facts, spelling lists, etc. this week with your child. It feels good to get back into the routine of school, doesn’t it!
We welcomed three new students on Tuesday. They are: Teah Guillen, grade 5; Jacob Tinajero, grade 4; and Jeremiah Ramirez, grade 3. Let’s work together to make them feel welcome!
Congratulations to Joan Romea, 4th grader, who entered the City of Santa Clarita Art on Canvas contest. Her artwork is just beautiful and she advanced to the city level. Congrats, Joan! We are proud of your accomplishments!
Our food pantries are probably low after the holidays. This month the PTA is collecting canned fruit, canned meat, and canned vegetables as part of the monthly food drive. The food collection supports Help the Children here in Santa Clarita. There are two barrels in the MPR near the PTA office and the food can be placed in those containers all month long. Thank you for helping to fight hunger in our valley. We appreciate all of Mrs. Susan Daymude’s work, as our PTA Food Drive Coordinator!
January Reading logs were handed out prior to vacation, so please encourage your child to keep reading and fill in those forms. We want each child to reach his/her reading goals each month. Additional reading logs are available in the school office. Please note: December reading logs are due to your child’s teacher this week!
SIX FLAGS - READ TO SUCCEED
Our school is participating in the “Read to Succeed” program sponsored by Six Flags and Discovery Education. This program encourages children to read for fun and gives them an opportunity to earn a FREE admission ticket to Magic Mountain! Students must read a total of 6 hours (360 minutes) of recreational reading. Parents must initial each entry and sign the completed reading log to verify that the six hours of reading has been completed. Reading logs are due on or before February 16, 2012. Late entries will not be accepted. Tickets will be distributed in May and are valid for admission on select dates during the 2012 season. Happy Reading!
ATTENDANCE
Please remember to call the office before 9:00 a.m. the morning that your student will be absent from school. The State of California requires a specific reason, "not feeling well" or "sick" are not acceptable. Please let us know if your child has a cold, is vomiting, is out of town, etc.
CAFETERIA
Please remember to monitor your child/childrens meal account. The National School Lunch Program (Sponsored by the Federal Government) does not permit the cafeteria to extend credit (IOU’s).
We do not ever want a child to go without a meal, so the Cafeteria Staff will provide a meal to your child once and then will send a notice home indicating the amount owed and asking that you deposit money into your child’s account. The numerous IOU’s that are handed out daily create a lot of additional work for the Kitchen Staff. We appreciate your understanding and hope to alleviate some of the additional paperwork for our gracious Cafeteria Staff.
SPECIAL EDUCATION COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE (CAC)
The Santa Clarita Valley CAC is composed of volunteer parents, educators, and other interested community members who want to make a difference in the education of all children.

ASSEMBLIES AND MORE!
This year, the PTA has prepared a couple of very fun and educational assemblies for January and April. Also, we worked with the COC PAC K-12 Arts outreach program and are able to present our students with a series of Art Workshops for every grade level.
Second grade will be making musical instruments with Martin Espino on January 31st.
Kindergarten will explore color formations with The Crayon Court on February 16th.
First grade will be able to create shadow puppets along with The Crayon Court on February 23rd.
Third grade will be playing Theatre Games with Aimee Hopkins on March 1st.
Exposure to the arts does wonders to the development of our children in school and out!
Parents, feel free to stop by on the day of your child’s workshop.
YEARBOOK UPDATES
The yearbook committee’s goal is to involve as many Tesoro families to share the wonderful pictures captured during school events. Every picture shared will contribute to the creation of a diverse representation of the children in the yearbook. Not to mention the excitement from the kids and parents alike looking for pictures they took in the yearbook.
If you have pictures to share, please leave them in the PTA Yearbook mailbox and email us at Tesoro.yearbook@yahoo.com If you have questions, or are interested in joining the committee and participate at events as time allows, we have CDs for you to transfer files.
Thank you and looking forward to a fun year,
Christina & Louis Polio
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS BINS
The PTA could use a little help from you to prepare your kids for an emergency. We are gathering supplies for our disaster bin and could use notepads and colored pencils. Many stores currently have these items on clearance for as low as 25 cents. These supplies will be used to give your children something to do as they face a potentially lengthy wait for parents or others you may have designated to pick them up from school. If you are able to help, please send the items in with your children clearly marked for the PTA Disaster Bin.
Thank you,
TaShera Jenkins

Message from Mrs. Post….
Reminder: Wednesday, December 21st will be a minimum day and dismissal will be at 12:35 p.m. that day. It is also Pajama Day! Students may wear their warm pajamas to school that day. It is the last day of school prior to Winter Break. This was chosen by the staff last August as the day to replace the minimum day usually set aside for Back to School Night. Since Back to School Night occurred prior to school opening, the minimum day became a “floating day”. It will be a busy and fun day with pajamas and special celebrations for the holidays! Please mark your calendars.
With next week being a short and busy week and realizing that the last thing everyone will be reading is my message in the newsletter, I’d like to take this time to wish all of our staff, students and families a very happy holiday season! Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Happy Kwanzaa! May the 2012 New Year bring peace and joy to you and your family! Happy New Year! School will reopen on Tuesday, January 17th!
Please note, I am sending home a monthly article from my Principals’ publication entitled, Tips on Gift-Giving and Receiving. I hope you find it has helpful and useful suggestions.
I’ve been asked by several staff members to once again ask that you use caution as you are walking and driving on school grounds. Last week we saw several near misses in our parking lot. Again, I will ask that you not walk through the parking lot but use the sidewalks and crosswalks to access our campus. Please keep in mind that the parking lot is closed at arrival time and dismissal time to further keep our students safe. Use the valet for dropping off and picking up your child. Thank you!

Message from Mrs. Post….
Our school health office was quite a busy place on Monday. I know this is cold and flu season and that was quite evident all day Monday. I also know that our students don’t like missing school, but I encourage you to keep your child home when they are sick. I also realize that many times they are feeling fine in the morning when they leave for school and then begin feeling ill later in the morning. Please remember that a child needs to be temperature free for 24 hours (without medication) before returning to school. We really want our students here but not when they are running temperatures and not feeling well enough to be working and playing. If we all work together, we can cut down on the spread of the cold and flu among classmates and teachers. With all that said, get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, and stay healthy!
I would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Lorena Diana, Mr. Suey Tiengerd and their volunteers who worked to make the Holiday Boutique, Kids’ Corner, a success. This week long event enabled our students to shop for their parents, siblings, and friends. Thank you to everyone who assisted to make the Kids’ Corner possible this year!
The PTA and staff hope to see you at Restaurant Night tonight. Two local restaurants, Jersey Mike’s and Swirly’s, will be supporting our school and donating a portion of the evening to Tesoro. Thank you to the owners of Jersey Mike’s and Swirly’s for making tonight possible. Thank you to Mr. Fabian Diana for organizing our restaurant nights!
Congratulations to Blake Brauneisen on his recent success. He and his team, the SCVAA Bantam Aztecs won the 2011 Super Bowl Championship in football this past weekend beating Ventura 37-20 to take the title. Way to go, Blake!
Once again with these chilly mornings and windy days, I encourage our students to layer for warmth. Monday’s cold wind made for a chilly day. Please remind your child to wear a jacket, gloves, hat, etc. in the mornings.
Reminder: There are lots of lost items in our Lost and Found. Please claim lost items by December 21st or they will be donated over Winter Break to a local organization. Lost and Found is located on the stage in the MPR. There are lots of jackets, sweatshirts, etc. on the Lost and Found rack.

Message from Mrs. Post….
After having turkey three days in a row, I was ready by Saturday for a juicy hamburger! How about you? Have you had it with turkey, turkey soup, turkey pot pie, etc.? I hope that you had a fun-filled family holiday. It was a bit difficult to watch the neighbors putting up holiday lights while it was 80 degrees and still November, but I decided to pull out some of the decorations. I just can’t bring myself to putting it up before it turns December. I guess I’m a traditionalist!
With all that said, it is just three and a half weeks until Winter Holiday! This time of year brings quite a bit of excitement for our students, but there is much to be accomplished. I hope you will try to keep continuity in schedules and routines for your child so that there is less disruption to the learning process. With vacation looming ahead, I am concerned with such a long winter break. Unfortunately, the holidays in December, holidays in January, and the Hart District schedule impacted our school schedule. During the break, I encourage you to have your child read, practice math facts (use educational games on the computer), practice typing skills (Tux Math available on the Internet), play spelling games (Spelling City), etc. It will help keep their skills from “taking a vacation”. You might also keep writing skills going by having your child write thank you notes to grandparents and relatives. That skill is somewhat of a “dying” tradition, but can reinforce writing skills and it’s a wonderful surprise to a grandparent to receive a thank you note from a grandchild!
Recently, the owner of Juice It Up! Terry McCleary, donated over 600 Juice It-Up! certificates to us. It provides students with a free juice or yogurt. Students are rewarded for classroom competitions, showing responsibility at school, reaching monthly reading goals, etc. With these certificates, we use them all year long. We extend a special Thank You to Mr. McCleary for helping support Tesoro del Valle School students.

SCV LITERACY AND ARTS FESTIVAL
Mark your calendars for Saturday, December 3rd. It’s time for the 5th Annual Santa Clarita Literacy and Arts Festival at Newhall Park from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is a fun-filled day for the family with Music, Theater, Storytelling, Arts and Crafts projects, a Book Swap, and Food.
Watch Suessical the Musical and Jack & Charlie & the Chocolate Beanstalk on stage.
See talented artists create Ice Sculptures and paintings. Visit Pop-Up Town and the Story Village. “Read” a Painting. Try your skills with Linker Logs, or a Gigantic Mosaic. Check out Once Upon an Opera
Finished a good book? Bring it to the festival and swap it for another one. Limit: 3 gently used books for pre-school through high school.

Post….
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! The staff and I look forward to being with our family and friends over this holiday, too. We all have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Here at Tesoro we are thankful for our students and their families, our staff, our PTA and our Tesoro community. May this holiday give you food for your table, family and friends to share your feast, and good times to be shared together!
Last Thursday two of our three fifth grade classes attended a College of the Canyons workshop that showcased Improvisation in the Theater. (One other class is scheduled for an alternate date). I was able to sit in on one of the classes and found it to be educational and fun! Students were quite involved and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the workshop. Thank you to Mrs. Fenelon who has been able to arrange for COC Performing Arts to be a part of our school assembly program this year.
Recently, we have had some reports of children being dropped off in the parking lot in the morning. Please use the valet line or park on the street and use the crosswalks to access the campus. We’ve also received reports of discourteous drivers. Please model respect for our students when on the school campus.
I will send the new calendar of events for December home next Tuesday. Until that time, please watch the newsletter for Dates to Remember.
CAFETERIA
Reminder: Please remember to monitor your child/childrens meal account.
We appreciate your understanding andhope to alleviate some of the additional paperwork for our gracious Cafeteria Staff.

Message from Mrs. Post….
Our teachers are working on the application for the California Distinguished Award and while it is time consuming, it is an important process for our school to experience. The application is due at the end of November and as you well know, November is quite a busy month on the school calendar. I would like to thank our teachers who have volunteered to be part of the writing teams and thank all the teachers who have so willingly given their time at after school meetings. It’s never easy to be out of the classroom, and the teachers have asked to be out only during the afternoon hours to cause less of an impact to their classes. We are also fortunate to have our favorite substitute teachers available this month to help us out. So, keep us in your thoughts and we hope that we will be successful in our endeavors!
Report cards will be sent home with your child this Friday afternoon, November 18th. As I mentioned to students at Monday broadcast, report cards are not to be opened and shared in front of the school. These reports are private and should be shared between parent and student. Too often, siblings find themselves comparing each other’s grades and hurt feelings are a result. I hope that you will take individual time with each child to review his/her report card.
Remember to celebrate your child’s successes and set goals for those areas that show a need to improve.
We look forward to seeing you at Marston’s tonight. The PTA has scheduled an all day restaurant day with Marston’s (located in the Bridgeport Marketplace). We hope to see you there! We also extend a special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. McCardy, owners of Marston’s, for their donation of certificates for our students and teachers.
Next Tuesday, our sixth graders welcome Valencia High students to the Tesoro campus. The students will be working with our sixth graders in a program called STRIVE (Student Teaching Respect Inclusion Values and Equality). This program was developed to create a cultural awareness and acceptance of each other’s differences. Included in the presentation will be a discussion of what to do in situations that might include peer pressure, bullying, and prejudice. We are fortunate that Valencia High is once again able to bring this special workshop to our students! Thank you to the students and their teachers at Valencia High School.

Message from Mrs. Post….
Fifth graders going to Camp Pali arrived at camp at approximately 9:45 a.m. Monday morning. Thank you, parents, who worked so hard to get your child ready for camp and got here on time to board the buses at seven a.m. Their departure went smoothly as planned by our wonderful teachers, Mrs. Lisa Craigie, Mrs. Melisa Ray, and Mrs. Michelle White! We look forward to more emails and photos in the next few days and their return on Thursday afternoon.
Our Reflections Reception last Wednesday was a celebration of our students and their unique gifts in the areas of literature, music, dance, art and photography. I hope you had a chance to see the student work on display. Teachers were invited to take their classes through the MPR on Thursday and Friday to view the beautiful work of our Tesoro students. I would like to once again extend a thank you to Mrs. Maria Fenelon and Mrs. Portia Guardado who worked so hard on the PTA Reflections contest. My thanks, too, to Mr. Polio who created the beautiful banner displayed above the stage and to all the judges who so kindly agreed to judge the Reflections entries. We hope to have their names as well as the Reflections honorees that will represent our school at the PTA Council level in our bulletin next week.
The word of character this month is Responsibility. Yesterday at broadcast I reminded students that it was their responsibility to do homework and put it in their backpack so that they had it for the next day. While the younger students might need some assistance at first, they can be taught to be responsible for their own homework. I’m hoping that through the broadcast each Monday morning that I can make suggestions that the students will remember and will help you at home as well.
Congratulations are extended to Mrs. Michelle White who has been chosen to be Tesoro’s honoree for the Santa Clarita Teacher Tribute this year. Each year, teachers at each site nominate a fellow teacher to be honored by the Santa Clarita Valley Education Foundation. It is well deserved and we wish Mrs. White a year filled with much deserved honors. Mrs. White will be honored at the College of the Canyons along with all the other teachers from each school in the Santa Clarita Valley. This special evening will be held in the spring at the COC Performing Arts Center. Congrats, Mrs. White.
As you know the state of California continues to make cuts to funding for the schools and we wait for more budget cuts in the next few months. Each day your child is out of school, no matter for illness or other reasons, the school loses approximately $30.00. After a recent Administration Meeting, it is apparent that we all need to join together to be sure that our students are here at school each day unless ill. We do not want your child here if they are ill but we do encourage them to be here rather than going on family vacations, trips to amusement parks, etc. If we have ten students absent, the school will lose $300.00 for that school day. Many of you already know that doctor and dental appointments need not be a full day out of school. Thank you for bringing your child to school and making arrangements to bring them back so school is not missed. Anything you can do to help us avoid loss of school funding is very much appreciated.

Message from Mrs. Post….
Last week was quite a week full of activities! Our chairperson for Red Ribbon Week, Mrs. Monique Loving, and I were talking this afternoon and we were quite excited with the children’s awareness and enthusiasm as they learned about the history of Red Ribbon Week and the importance of making good choices in life. Thank you to our DEA Agent, Taylor Lopresti and the agents who assisted at the assembly. Thank you to Sheriff’s Detective, Jeff Hoslet, and his partner, Jack (the search dog) who talked about good choices and allowed us to see his partner, Jack, in action.
Wow, the results are in and Jog-A-Thon has raised $33,500.00 for our school! Just amazing and we are so appreciative to parents, teachers, and students for their hard work in raising money for our school. We especially want to thank Mrs. Lisa Maloney, who has worked tirelessly for months in preparation. It takes so much time organizing the Jog-a-Thon and finding sponsors (all the t-shirts were given to students free through the donations by our sponsors). Thank you to all the volunteer parents who worked with Mrs. Maloney. It was the teamwork of all that made the difference. Students have earned three days of no homework, and your child’s teachers will let you know the days without homework.
I know that many of you were able to attend the PTA Fall Festival and had a great time. Again, thank you to Mrs. Karen Waterman and her parent volunteers! What a fun evening! It is amazing to see the team spirit, as these events are prepared from beginning to end. I was pleased to see that even at the end of the evening parents and students stayed to help the clean-up committee. Wow! I stopped to chat with the DJ who also stayed to play music, and he was so complimentary about our students and their families.
Thanks one and all!
Congratulations to Davis Cop, fifth grader, who was a member of the Wm. S. Hart Pony World Championship Baseball Team of Santa Clarita Valley. He and his team won the Mustang World Series in Texas this past summer. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recently honored the members of the team. Way to go, Davis!
We look forward to our Reflections Reception tonight at 6:00 p.m. in the MPR. Invitations to the participants have been sent home. I can’t wait to see the student work on display. See you at the reception! Thank you again, Mrs. Maria Fenelon and Mrs. Portia Guardado, for all your hard work on the PTA Reflections contest.
Our word of character for November is Responsibility. I hope that you and your child will discuss this important word of character. You might want to discuss what Responsibility means not only at school but also at home.

RED RIBBON WEEK
Red Ribbon Week was a fun and exciting week for the students. The students had an opportunity to decorate their doors with a drug free message, to learn about Enrique “KIKI” Camerena, to see Officer Jack in action, to participate in trivia questions and sidewalk chalk drawings, and to reflect on what Red Ribbon Week means to them. The message was very clear to them to make healthy choices and to live a drug free life.
I would like to personally thank each parent who participated in the preparation of this week’s activities as well as those who were present for its implementation. I could not have done it without you. I would also like to thank all of our wonderful teachers who also helped to make this week a success.

Volunteers needed - the yearbook needs volunteers during school events! Participation is easy as you attend our school events, please share and take a few extra pictures for yearbook consideration.
BOX TOPS
Keep sending in your BoxTops! Our next collection date is December 16. Look for the details of our next contest coming soon.
A great big thank you to our local Albertson's for donating the popsicles for our last BoxTops contest.
Don't forget you can earn BoxTops while shopping online. Go to boxtops4education.com and shop your favorite local retailers. Print out a copy of "Your Earnings" page and send it in with your BoxTops to your child's class, and we'll count online BoxTops towards the contest.
TURBO TIGERS RUNNING CLUB IS BACK

Message from Mrs. Post….
This is quite a busy week with the beginning of Red Ribbon Week, followed by Jog-a-Thon on Wednesday morning, and rounding out the week with the Fall Festival on Friday. Our PTA Volunteers go above and beyond and I’d like to acknowledge the Chairs for each of these events: Mrs. Monique Loving for Red Ribbon Week activities; Mrs. Lisa Maloney for Jog-a-thon; and Mrs. Karen Waterman for Fall Festival. Their organizational skills and enthusiasm are amazing. We thank all the volunteers on each of their committees who are helping make this week a success! Thank you one and all. Parents are all welcome to attend any and all of the events this week.
With Halloween coming soon, I’ve asked teachers to review Stranger-Danger rules in the classrooms. Please talk to your child at home as well. It’s a good time to review safety rules for children. Some recommendations you might want to emphasize:
*Do not go Trick or Treating alone. Travel in a group and with an adult. Do not enter a house to get candy.
*Take a flashlight along as you go Trick or Treating. Also take a whistle and a walking stick in case of a wild animal in the area. Carry a cell phone for emergencies.
*Do not talk with strangers and never ever approach a car you do not know. If someone in a car approaches you or follows you, run to the nearest house to get help!
*Never walk alone to and from school. Walk in pairs or groups of children and with an adult. Avoid waiting for parents in an area off campus where there are no adults to keep you safe.
*Do not be tricked into helping a “stranger” find a lost puppy/kitten.
*Do not open the door when home alone. Do not give information to a caller on the phone as to parents’ whereabouts. Teach your child what to do in an emergency. Try some role-playing so your child knows what to do in each situation.
Have a safe and Happy Halloween.
I’ve noticed some late arrivals recently while helping with the valet line. Remember the first bell rings at 8:10 a.m. and the bell at 8:15 a.m. signals the start of school. If your child arrives after the second bell at 8:15 a.m., he/she will need to go to the office and pick up a late pass. Let’s try and get to school on time! Remember the playground opens at 7:50 a.m. and the children do like to visit with friends before class or even get breakfast before school! Those can be incentives to get to school early! Also, we have been experiencing a considerable numbers of students in the office at the end of the day; please try to arrive on time to pick up your students.
Reminder to Slow Down: While I have jurisdiction in the school parking lot, the CHP officers can ticket those cars making illegal U-Turns in the street, cars parked in front of a driveway, and those going too fast on the streets around a school. Please be respectful of neighbors who live around our school and please, please slow down for the safety of all our children! Should you have a need to call the CHP to complain regarding illegal or unsafe activities on our streets, please call 661-244-5540 and you can register your complaint with the CHP.
Recently, it was suggested that in an effort to save on paper and time, we might look into an email service in order to send out the newsletter. We understand that while it is available on the school website, it is easier to open an email attachment. In the coming weeks, we would like to try emailing the newsletter through the classroom teacher’s email. This is just a trial run to see how we like the process and then we can decide if it’s worth the cost of the email service. In the coming weeks, you will receive a copy of the newsletter via email and also a hard copy sent home with your child. You should get only one copy as it goes to the youngest child or only child. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are receiving more than one hard copy of the newsletter. Thank you!
We had some very sad news, last Sunday, Eilsey, the 3 year old granddaughter of our District Nurse, Gail Winter, passed away suddenly. Our hearts and prayers go out to Gail, her husband Randy, and Eilsey's parents Scott and Steph.
For more information visit their website: go to Events and Eisley's page will come up with the information: www.harbortrinity.org

Message from Mrs. Post….
I had some very exciting news over the weekend! I am delighted to report that Tesoro del Valle is eligible to apply for the California Distinguished School Award. This is a great honor and a tribute to our staff in gaining eligibility. This next month will be important for the teachers and me as we complete the lengthy application. As I told our students this morning at broadcast, this is the Academy Award-the Oscars for schools, and while many schools are eligible, not all can be chosen. Criteria for completing the application are extensive, and the final choice is based on a rubric that educators from around the state of California use to judge the applications. Wish us well as we begin our journey!
Have you heard? Library is open, and we have many new books available that have been acquired through donations from the PTA and other sources. Mrs. Janet Squires is our librarian and is always delighted to have parents who would like to volunteer in the library. Just drop by for a visit and check out the books available for adults as well!
Speaking of our PTA…..Did you know that through funds raised last year in the Jog-a-Thon, the PTA is able to help fund our Music and PE (Physical Education) programs here at Tesoro. Wow! In this budgetary crisis in education, your support of PTA is so appreciated. They have funded the My Access writing program for the entire fifth grade class. This is the program that the students used with their netbooks last year in 4th grade. The cost is $15.00 per student and provides continuity for our students and teachers. We’ve seen wonderful results with this writing program! Thank you to all who support our PTA!
This is National Bully Awareness Month and we continue to work within our Caring Schools program to stamp out bullying on our campus, in our neighborhood, and in our community. Our teachers continue to work with students through class meetings and class activities to provide our students with information and strategies to combat bully situations they may encounter. Mrs. Marianne Smith and Mrs. Kim Farr are Tesoro’s Bully Prevention/Conflict Resolution Coordinators who work with teachers and students as issues or concerns arise. Mrs. Megan Conley is our Coordinator for Caring Schools, our Character Education Program. Through this program teachers are working with students to promote good character. When you hear about class meetings, buddy activities between grade levels, homeside activities, you are hearing about activities promoted by our Caring Schools Program. This is a district wide program and is being taught at all our schools in the Saugus District.
COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS
College of the Canyons Physics and Astronomy faculty member David Michaels invites you to join him for a “Star Party” on Friday, October 21st, at 7:30 p.m. (weather permitting). Bring a blanket to the Canyon Country Campus, Carl A. Rasmussen Amphitheater at 17200 Sierra Highway, Santa Clarita, 91351. Plan to view a possible comet, meteor shower, Jupiter and its moons and many other wonders. This event is free to the public.

Message from Mrs. Post….
Change of date: The Primary Intervention Program Open House has been postponed. Invitations will be sent home once a new date has been established.
Welcome back after a week of Fall Break. It did feel like fall for a while last week and now we expect triple digits by Thursday! I hope our students had some special family time and enjoyed a week free from school obligations! I just hope that with a week off, they were able to do some of their reading for enjoyment. Let’s get them participating in the Pizza Hut Reading Program that has just begun as of this month.
Thank you to our men and women from the Elks Lodge. They donated dictionaries to our third grade students once again this year. This is a community project that the Elks Lodge members participate in every year and make sure that every third grader in the Santa Clarita Valley has a current school dictionary. Thank you to these dedicated men and women!
The last day of school prior to Fall Break, our sixth graders participated in College of the Canyons Performing Arts Center’s ‘Rock the Rhythm: Beat the Odds’ program. This is an interactive drumming program, entitled Beat the Odds, which was developed through a UCLA study. Beat the Odds integrates activities from contemporary drum circles and working with groups to teach skills in focusing, listening, team building, positive risk taking, self-esteem, awareness of others, leadership, expressing feelings, empathy, etc. Each of the sixth grade classes had a separate assembly and had their own drum. One of the activities included telling about a favorite food, favorite color, and favorite animal. This was all set to the beat of the drum. I was able to participate in one of the assemblies and had fun working with our sixth graders as well as learning so much more about them. The plan for the next few months is for the program to be introduced to every 6th and 7th grade class in the Santa Clarita Valley, culminating in a drum circle to take place on Friday, May 18, 2012, at College of the Canyons’ Cougar Stadium. Stay tuned for more information regarding this important event.
Congratulations to Brandon Polak, sixth grader, who is a gymnast and has recently qualified for the National competition at the Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs in November. Way to go, Brandon! Our very best wishes to you as you prepare for this great event!
***If you experienced some difficulty calling school yesterday, it was due to technical difficulty. We also experienced difficulty with the system. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

1st & 2nd grades: 8:30-9:00
3rd & 4th grades: 9:20-9:50
Kindergarten 10:15-10:40

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS BINS
The PTA could use a little help from you to prepare your kids for an emergency. We are gathering supplies for our disaster bin and could use notepads and colored pencils. Many stores currently have these items on clearance for as low as 25 cents. These supplies will be used to give your children something to do as they face a potentially lengthy wait for parents or others you may have designated to pick them up from school. If you are able to help, please send the items in with your children clearly marked for the PTA Disaster Bin.
Thank you,
TaShera Jenkins

Message from Mrs. Post….
I am still amazed with the Tesoro del Valle school spirit that I observed/experienced the past few weeks! The participation and turnout of parents and students for Book Fair, Restaurant Night, PTA Association meeting, PTA Membership drive, Jog-a-Thon sponsorships, etc. have been heart-warming to say the least. Thank you to each and every one who volunteers to support our school as well as all of those who participate and “write those checks”. This school year is off to a great start!
Congratulations to our Student Council Officers for the 2011-2012 school year. They are: Emmi Payne, President; Sydney Craigie, Vice-President; Anneliese Breidsprecher, Secretary; Treasurer, Sabrina Acosta; Andrew Nance, Parliamentarian; Shantanu Jhaveri, Sports Equipment Director. Each of the candidates (33 in all) did a marvelous job throughout the campaign. I am proud of each and every one of them. Thank you to everyone who participated in the recent election process. I encourage students who would like to pursue their leadership skills to try out to be a Student Council representative for their class.
This week is a full week of school with no minimum days. We officially begin Fall Break at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30th. School wil not be in session the week of October 3-7. School resumes on Monday, October 10th at 8:15 a.m. I hope that students and teachers will enjoy a well- deserved week of vacation and want to wish all observers of Rosh Hashanah a blessed holiday. I am encouraging students to read for enjoyment over the break and possibly take some trips to museums, the library, etc. Have a safe and fun Fall Break!
Safety Reminder: Once again we’ve had some scary encounters in the parking lot at arrival and dismissal times. I encourage parents and students to use the crosswalks at the driveway to access the crosswalks to walk on the sidewalk as you enter and leave campus. Please, for the safety of your children, do not walk them through the parking lot.
ATTENDANCE
Please remember to call the office before 9:00 a.m. the morning that your student will be absent from school. The State of California requires a specific reason, "not feeling well" or "sick" are not acceptable. Please let us know if your child has a cold, is vomiting, is out of town, etc.
Thank you.

Message from Mrs. Post….
We are delighted to see so many parents during this conference week. Keep in mind that the schedule is a bit different due to a Pupil Free Day on Wednesday and Minimum days on Thursday and Friday. Minimum day dismissal is at 12:35 p.m. Be sure and pack a nice big snack for your child on Thursday and Friday as there is no lunchtime on minimum days. Please remember that the parking lot is closed at dismissal time for safety of our children. We encourage you to use the valet line. Monday’s dismissal of over 600 students took just 16 minutes to clear the valet line! I extend a special thank you to our teachers and office staff who assist in the dismissal especially on such hot days.
I’d like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Brauneisen and her volunteer parents for all the organization and assistance on Picture Day! Life Touch finished all the photos well before lunchtime. They had three cameras that day and the lines moved quickly! Don’t forget Spirit Wear is on sale this week. Again, thank you to Mrs. Brauneisen for coordinating spirit wear. The t-shirt variety is just great!
This week is the PTA Mrs. Nelson’s Book Fair in our library! The library is just beautiful with new books to purchase, and I’d like to thank Mrs. Monique Seitz and her volunteers as they’ve worked so hard to put the displays all together. Book Fair is open each day from 8:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (except Wednesday), and classes will be visiting the book fair on their designated day. Friday, the book fair will close at 1:15 p.m.
Mark your calendars: This Thursday is PTA Restaurant Night at Coldstone Creamery, and the fun begins at 12:30 and ends at 7:30 p.m. Coldstone is located on McBean right across from the Post Office and near Pavilions. We hope to see you there!

Message from Mrs. Post….
This weekend was particularly somber with the ten-year remembrance of the disasters on September 11, 2001. I do want to say thank you to Mrs. Conley and her committee as well as the Boy Scout Color Guard, Lt. Colonel Ethan Goldberg, the first grade teachers and their first graders who sang and made flags, the sixth graders who read poems and essays, the Girl Scouts from Troop 3472, and Mrs. Faulkner. Mrs. Conley and her committee put together a very touching ceremony to salute the heroes in our lives and to remember those who lost their lives in the events ten years ago. Thank you to the many parents and grandparents who attended the ceremony as well. It was wonderful to see you and have you be a part of the day. The wonderful essays and poems are being compiled in a notebook in the office so that they can be shared in the years to come.
Parent Teacher Conferences begin next week, and the teachers and I have tried to put together a conference schedule that will work for everyone. We scheduled conferences “back to back” for those families with more than one child in school as well. Please RSVP by the end of this week, so that teachers can finalize their schedules. Be sure and think about what questions you might have for your
child’s teacher and what goals you might have for your child this year. You might want to write down questions and goals as you prepare for your conference. Should you need to cancel and
reschedule a conference; please call the office so we might alert the teacher. If you call after 4:00 p.m. and the office is closed, please use our automated system to reach your child’s classroom teacher.
On Tuesday, September 6th, a bat was found on an upper wall of the two-story building. Our custodial staff contained the bat and contacted the County Animal Control Department who removed the animal from our campus. At no time were any students exposed to the bat as it was discovered high up on the exterior wall of the two-story building well out of reach of children. On Friday, September 9th, we received notification from the County that the bat tested positive for rabies. This is not an uncommon occurrence as several bats found in our valley recently have tested positive for the disease. It is very important that parents remind their children to stay clear of bats in order to protect themselves. If bats are found in the neighborhood, please contact the Castaic Animal Control immediately at 661-257-3191. Never approach a bat or attempt to handle it. For more information on bats, contact the Castaic Animal Control.
Music classes for Kindergarten through sixth grade begin this week. Classes will be held in Room 23 and Mrs. Michele Boron is back again this year to teach music for us. Thank you to the PTA for funding these classes through money raised last year during fundraising events and Jog-a-Thon!
We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Janie Faris returning in the Primary Intervention Program (PIP) and Mr. Mike Mann returning in the Children of Divorce Intervention Program (CODIP). This program is funded through a grant for three years and is specifically for Kindergarten through Third Grade.
The PIP Program is an award winning K – 3rd grade curriculum in place at this school site, which helps general education children work through shyness, making friendships, some personal losses, being new to school, and other mild “school adjustment” issues. This is done by children engaging with a caring adult SUSD employee child aide in the playroom, through play – which is a child’s best form of expression.
The CODIP program is another award winning K-3rd grade program in place at this site. This is simply a peer support group for general education students managed by a specially trained child aide, to normalize the idea of divorce/separation. It brings together students who are age appropriate peers, whose families are going through similar situations, so the students know they are not alone.
VISION SCREENING
Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 14th, our Kindergartners, 2nd and 5th Graders will have their vision checked. Should your child have any difficulties through the screening, you will be notified via U.S. Mail in just a few days. No news is good news.
STUDENT RELEASE PROCEDURES
Please look for the brochures coming home today explaining the Student Release Procedure. These brochures contain valuable information and we recommend that you keep them in the vehicles that are used to transport your children.
ATTENDANCE
Please remember to call the office before 9:00 a.m. the morning that your student will be absent from school. The State of California requires a specific reason, "not feeling well" or "sick" are not acceptable. Please let us know if your child has a cold, is vomiting, is out of town, etc.

Message from Mrs. Post….
As I sit down to write, it seems almost impossible that the school year started just last Wednesday morning. So much has happened recently; that it feels like more time has passed. On Friday while I was awaiting the go ahead from the district office to reorganize my primary grades, I received an emergency call from my dad’s assisted living facility where he resides. After spending 8 hours in Henry Mayo’s ER, there was still no confirmed explanation for his symptoms that mimicked a stroke. He had trouble speaking and could not walk. After many tests, doctors have finally determined that pneumonia played a part in this illness/ hospitalization. I hope to return to work later this week once I have him home and am sure he is out of danger. At 88 years of age, pneumonia is very dangerous! Thank you to my office staff (Mrs. Tyrrell, Mrs. Guinn, Mrs. Diem) and my Leadership Team (Mrs. White, Mrs. Paterson, Mrs. Howard, Mrs. Grosh, and Mr. Rude) for their continued support as we opened school and reorganized on Friday.
We also send get-well wishes to Mrs. Haylee Richardson who broke her arm over the weekend and will be out for the rest of the week. I’m sure she misses her Kindergartners and their special hugs! We have a wonderful substitute teacher by the name of Ms. Regina Polikaitis covering her class. Get Well Soon, Mrs. Richardson!
Just a few reminders regarding safety here at school:
Ø Please use the crosswalk to and from the parking lot. Cutting across the lanes of valet is very dangerous!
Ø I encourage you to use the crosswalks at the driveways and across campus rather than cutting through the parking lot. I do not allow children in the parking lot unless accompanied by an adult.
Ø Please hang up the cell phones when you are in the car and driving through the campus lot. Driving while on the phone is against the law. I encourage you to give your full attention to your child who is excited to see you after a full day at school or is wanting your attention to kiss you good-bye prior to beginning school.
Ø Now that we are into our sixth day of school, there is no need to accompany your child onto the playground. Our campus supervisors are on the yard beginning at 7:50 a.m., and we are encouraging children to visit and play with each other prior to school. On the kindergarten yard, it is best to wait till 8:00 a.m. to drop your child off since there are 94 kindergartners, and we do not allow students on the play structure in the morning on the Kindergarten playground.
Again, these reminders are for everyone’s safety especially the children! Thank you!

Message from Mrs. Post….
This is the last newsletter of the 2010-2011 school year! Wow! Where did the year go? It’s hard to believe that the 6th graders being promoted to Jr. High started at Tesoro as first graders in 2005 when we opened the school. There are some PTA parents who are leaving us this year as their youngest are now in 6th grade. I’d like to thank the following PTA moms who have been instrumental in helping to establish Tesoro del Valle. They are: Lisa Bomben (Tesoro’s first PTA President), Sandy Aranda, Cynthia Brown, Erika McClintock, Maisah Howard and Stacey Fischer. I would also like to thank our present PTA President and Vice-President; Erika Yamasaki and Lorena Diana for their service for the past two years. All of these individuals as well as all the PTA Executive Board Members and Chairpersons work tirelessly for our students, families and community. We are so fortunate to have known each of them!
I’d like to thank our Site Council members who served this year: Lorena Diana, Barbara DeSantis, Liz Martin, Kari Curt, Karin Smith, Suey Tiengerd, Michelle White, Karen Davis, Dawn Fujino, and Danielle Galarza. They met eight times this year and worked together on budget, parent survey, curriculum, etc. Thank you for your time!
We have some changes in staffing for the coming school year. We are sad to say good-bye to Mrs. Jamie Pawlak who has been a teacher at Tesoro for 5 years and most recently has been in a long term teaching position to cover our teachers on maternity leave. We hope that Mrs. Pawlak who was caught in the Reduction in Force position will be rehired as positions become available next year. We say good-bye also to Mr. Chad Best, who we will dearly miss as he transitions to Rio Vista Elementary School. We thank him for his work with our Math Club and Math Field Day teams. He has brought our teams to the winner’s circle each year. We know that change is difficult for all of us but we realize that in change there is growth and we wish Mrs. Pawlak and Mr. Best well as they pursue their teaching careers.
Save the Date: Recently, at a PTA meeting it was suggested that a return to school event/night might be changed to help our students adjust to the first day of school and introduce the community to the PTA a bit earlier in the year. In talking with several SUSD principals, the idea of having Back to School Night prior to the first day of school has been shown to be effective in helping children and parents transition after summer vacation into a new grade level. (There are now three schools that will have Back to School Night prior to the start of school this next school year.) This idea was brought to the teachers who felt that they would like to try a new innovative idea in regards to Back to School Night. After discussion, it was decided to schedule Back to School Night on Monday, August 15th at 6:30 p.m. (First day of school is Wednesday, August 17th). This is for parents/adults only and the orientation will be in two sessions in the classrooms as we’ve done in the past.
The PTA is finalizing plans to have a Back to School Celebration in the parking lot in the afternoon that same day and we will have class lists posted that day at approximately 3:30 p.m. PTA is considering an ice cream social for parents and students. You will receive more information in the summer mailing at the beginning of August.
Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Tuesday, August 16th at 8:30 a.m. Please join us in the Multi-Purpose Room for a short welcome and introductions.Recognition goes to Sophia Kessler who recently cut and donated her beautiful hair to benefit those in need of wigs who are battling cancer. What a kind and caring gesture! We are proud of you, Sophia!
Congratulations to Stephenie Freeman, PTA Head Room Parent who was recently honored by the SCV PTA Council with a Spotlight Award for her work with the Read across America event that took place at the beginning of March. Way to go, Mrs. Freeman!
And finally, thank you to our Tesoro PTA parents who have worked so hard to raise money for Tesoro del Valle students, staff, and school. The PTA voted to gift $29,000.00 to Tesoro del Valle to fund the PE teacher and the Music Teacher; 4 classroom projectors and airliners; 10 walkie talkies to replace outdated and broken walkie talkies; the My Access program for grades 5 & 6 (district is able to fund 4th grade through a grant); and money to buy books for the library! Wow! Look what you all were able to do as you supported the school! Thank you, thank you!!
Have a fabulous summer vacation and wherever you may be, be safe and be careful. We will see you on August 15th at Back to School Night!
PTA NEWS
THANK YOU!
I thank each and every one of you for all of your support of our fundraising efforts this year. Our core fundraisers (Jog-a-thon, Square 1 Art, Specialist Donation Drive) rose over $40,000!! That's fabulous!! Your generosity has enabled the PTA to sponsor events like Fall Festival, Field Trips, Mother-Son/Father-Daughter, Career Day, Teacher Appreciation, Read across America, Field Day, Promotion and more. Additionally, the PTA is able to gift funds to the school for next year. Those funds will support the PE and Music Specialists, library books, My ACCESS software subscription, wireless walkie talkies and Airliner projectors. Our children benefit each and every school day from your generosity. Thank you for your donations but also for making it fun!! See you next school year!

Message from Mrs. Post….
Memorial Day weekend came and went and here it is the first of June! Just seven more days left of school, and if you’re a student six and a half! Yes, Friday, June 10th is a minimum day and I know our students and teachers are looking forward to the last day of school. There is much to be done as we close school for the summer and much to be done to prepare for it to open. The school will be open through June and we will also accommodate the GATE and Enrichment classes slated for June 15-30th. The school office will be open during that time but hours will vary with the office closed through the lunch hour. If you have school business, please call the office prior to coming by. The office will be closed during the first part of July but the custodians will be here working in classrooms, etc. preparing the school for next year.
Have you seen the 2010-2011 Tesoro yearbooks? Wow! They are beautiful and we are so pleased. A huge thank you goes to Mrs. Portia Guardado, Mrs. Norma Rubio, and Mrs. Christine Pike! Once again, we have an amazing photographic memory book to cherish for years to come! Thank you so much for all your hard work and thank you to all those who helped contribute photographs to our yearbook!
The third grade Space Musical is tonight at 6:30 p.m. and we look forward to a fun program put on by our third graders and their teachers, Mrs. Sarah Faulkner, Mrs. Ratika Kohli, and Mrs. Jan Cooper. I’ve heard them practicing and we are all in for a treat this evening!
Thursday afternoon, June 2nd at 4:00 p.m. the Tesoro Band will hold a concert in the MPR. These students have been learning to play various musical instruments and working hard to become a band. We look forward to the concert tomorrow afternoon.
We’ve had a few calls in the office regarding the 2011-2012 school calendar. A few weeks ago I did mention important dates/vacations, etc. First day of school is Wednesday, August 17th. The calendar can be found on line at the SUSD website. We will send a hard copy out with the summer mailing.

Thank you Mrs. Tyrrell, Mrs. Guinn and Mrs. Diem for all you do!

Message from Mrs. Post….
Career Day for fourth through sixth grade was a huge success thanks to our PTA parents. First, let’s begin by thanking Mr. Kevin Ross, who chaired the event as well as his committee. Mr. Ross provided the students with a website designed to allow students to sign up on line for the individual presentations of their choice. Looking at the site, it was possible to see a video and get acquainted with each presenter. There were links to additional career paths to follow and professionals in those careers. It was very exciting to see technology in action for an event held at the elementary level.
Mr. Ross was able to provide careers that include the movie industry, rescue, engineering, public service, finance, medical, law and order, legal, etc. We extend thanks to the following presenters: Rosalind Wayman, Dave Perry, Eva Payne, Suey Tiengerd, Alex Jimenez, Matthew Begley, Adian Bot, Rachael Schalkx, Ron Senkowski, Eric Christiansen, Kevin Ross, Michael Bailiey Smith, Starr Sandak, Laura Bertoni, Cynthia Brown, and Pamela Johnston. You gave your most precious gift and that was your time to our students and staff. You’ve inspired all of us and for that we appreciate each and every one of you. Many thanks!
The Site Council Parent Survey is now going paperless, and we hope that you will take a few minutes to complete the survey. I’ve asked the teachers to email the link to parents through their classroom email. Results will be tallied by “Survey Monkey” and will be provided to the Site Council. We hope you will provide us with feedback on how you feel your child and your school is doing this year. Thank you for your time!
Kudos to Mackenzie Characky in Room 7, Mrs. Conley’s class for their donation to the Music and PE fund for next year. These children showed their caring attitude and took responsibility in making the donation. Way to go, Mackenzie and friends in Room 7!
Congratulations to Breanna Moffitt and Ryan Shear who took second place at their grade level in last weekend’s Chess Tournament. They’ve added yet another trophy to our school and we are very proud of their achievements!

Message from Mrs. Post…
STAR Testing is officially finished for the 2010-2011 school year! Mrs. White and Mrs. Paterson boxed the tests and they are ready to be returned to the District Office and from there the tests will go to the state to be scored. Test results will be back mid-August, and they will be sent home within two weeks of school opening. Sixth grade test results will be mailed in late August as our sixth graders will be Jr. High students! I know that students worked hard to do well and kudos to our teachers who worked diligently all year to ensure that all content standards were taught and our students were well prepared.
This Thursday is a minimum day and there are many events prior to Open House at 6:30 p.m. especially if you are a fourth grade parent. There will be an important meeting to introduce you to Camp Pali that will be happening for next year’s 5th graders. The trip will be earlier next year and has been scheduled for the week of November 7-10th. At 6:00 p.m. the 4th grade teachers and students will host Technology Night for their parents and families to share their projects learned through the 4th grade SWATTEC program. Also, at 6:00 p.m. Mrs. Wendy Hersch and the Glee Club will be featured in the MPR. Stop by for some wonderful music entertainment prior to Open House!
Speaking of Open House, did you know that Tesoro has a Science Lab? It has been a project this year that Mr. Rude and Mr. Goldstein (with the help of several upper grade teachers) have organized and assembled. With money donated by Boston Scientific, the lab is now equipped with a projector, an ELMO (you’ll have to see this new technology), lab tables, science supplies, etc. Mrs. King’s fourth graders will be assisting parents on Thursday evening so be sure and stop by the Science Lab located in Room 22 which is the first room off the upstairs atrium area as you enter the double doors of Pod B. This Science Lab is available for all our students and teachers to use in their science studies.
As in the past, we will try to accommodate as many cars in the parking lot as possible. There will be a section of the lot reserved for our staff, but the rest of the main lot, the Child Care lot, and the lot adjacent to the MPR will be available. When the lots fill up, we will park cars single file in the valet area. We must keep the left lane open for emergency purposes. Those parking on the street, please be respectful of our neighbors and do not block driveways, etc. Thank you!
On Friday, May 20th, the fourth through sixth graders will be learning about many interesting and varied careers. Thanks to Mr. Kevin Ross who agreed to chair this event, Career Day will provide students with information that will help them on their career path. Parents are invited to attend as well. Career Day begins at 8:30 a.m. in the MPR. We hope to see you there.
This is Classified Week and we honor all staff (other than our teachers who were honored the first week in May) at Tesoro del Valle. The Classified staff includes office staff, custodians, campus supervisors, instructional aides, PIP aides, Child Care assistants, Food Service Personnel, etc. Students and teachers have been busy preparing special treats and cards to express their appreciation. It truly does take “a village” to raise a child and while we are not a village, we are definitely a community! Thank you to all our dedicated staff members!
Today at broadcast I mentioned to students that they needed to review the information about appropriate dress in the Parent Student Handbook. We are seeing very short shorts, skirts, baggy pants, sandals, backless shoes, make-up, unusual hair color, and dangling jewelry. While this dress may be appropriate for weekends, it is not appropriate for school. I encourage you to discuss the rules with your child. Thank you for your attention to our concerns.

Message from Mrs. Post….
I hope that all of our moms had a wonderful Mother’s Day with their families. I was at a mall on Saturday and it seemed that quite a few families were enjoying a day together perhaps celebrating Mother’s Day a bit early. Yesterday, I noticed quite a few moms and children at the Central Park Dog Park as well. It was so nice to see everyone out together and enjoying their free time.
Remember that STAR testing continues through Thursday of this week. Each grade level finishes on a different day this week so please check information with your child’s teacher as to their schedule for testing. Make-ups are done when the student returns as the STAR Test Coordinators are able to schedule time for each student. Be sure that your child arrives on time, eats a good breakfast and gets a good night’s rest!
Our first graders presented their musical play, Habitats, on Friday morning. The children under the direction of their teachers did a fabulous job singing, acting, dancing, etc. as they celebrated what they learned in science these past few months. I think this was one of the best performances yet! Thank you to our first graders and their teachers, Mrs. Luckenbach, Mrs. Pawlak, Mrs. Grosh, and Mrs. Conley.
The Kindergartners started the weekend off for their mothers and/or Very Important Persons on Friday afternoon with a lovely tea and singing program. Students shared what he or she liked to do best with their moms. It was so sweet! Thank you Kindergarten Teachers (Mrs. Kaulbach, Mrs. Howard, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Fujino, and Mrs. Galarza)! Thank you to our sixth grade helpers who assisted with serving of refreshments.
The Saugus Union School District calendar for the 2011-2012 school year is now available through the Saugus website. Due to uncertainties in the state budget, the collaborative planning days and furlough days (if needed) are tentative. This coming year there will not be the once a month minimum days for collaborative planning. Those will be non-attendance days during the school year. The individual school sites will establish dates for Back to School Night and Open House. As soon as we have a complete calendar, we will send them home to you. In the meantime, some important dates are:
First Day of School-Wednesday, August 17th; Fall Break-October 3-7; Staff Development Day-Tuesday, November 1st; Thanksgiving Holiday-Wednesday November 23-25; Winter Break-December 22-January 16th (January 16th is also MLK Day so we return on January 17th); Presidents’ Day Weekend-February 17-20; Spring Break-April 1-6; Memorial Day Weekend with Collegial Plan Day-Mary 25-28; Last Day of School-June 13th. I hope that helps as you plan your vacation and family trips.
Please mark your calendars for Tesoro’s Open House on Thursday, May 19th at 6:30 p.m. The fourth grade classes are planning their Technology Night prior to Open House and their classrooms will open at 5:30 p.m. the same night. There will also be a Camp Pali meeting for fourth grade parents on Thursday, May 19th at 5:00 p.m. Fifth grade teachers who are coordinating the trip have information to share and the camp trip is earlier this year so please be sure and plan to attend this very important planning meeting. We look forward to seeing everyone for this busy and fun evening as we celebrate our student’s accomplishments this year!
For those looking ahead to next year, the teachers are compiling supply lists for each grade level and we will have these for you in June prior to the end of school. Again, we were able to do so much more thanks to all of the supplies that were donated through your children to our classrooms and to our teachers. Many, many thanks to all of our students and parents!

Message from Mrs. Post….
Today the PTA committee honored our teachers. They began decorating the staff room on Monday afternoon, and provided our staff with a wonderful breakfast and lunch today. Not only did they spoil us with yummy treats and a delicious luncheon but also they supplied goodies such as a book bag, paper, white board markers, etc. Thank you to all our parents and students who showed us just how much all teachers are appreciated especially those of us at Tesoro del Valle! We think you are all very special families and we are dedicated to working with each and every student!
Our students in grades 2-6 began the STAR testing this morning and finished by recess. Those needing a bit more time were given more time as the tests are not timed. Thank you to our Student Council for the special test taking bracelets and pencils that remind us, “I’m on the track to do my best”! Several of our student council members performed a skit at the PEP Rally Friday and again on Monday Broadcast that promoted good test practices such as getting enough rest the night before the test, eating a good breakfast, arriving at school on time, and remembering to relax and do your best! (Thank you, Ryan White, Amy Pfung, Chloe Panoussi, Emmi Payne, Tyler Mollinedo and Natalie Hussein. Testing continues this week on Wednesday and Thursday and again on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next week, May 10th-12th.
Congratulations to Gabriella Fenelon who took first place in the Jr. Toastmasters Persuasive Speech Event for fifth and sixth graders last Thursday. Gabriella’s topic, Blue Parking Spaces was quite impressive and had a great impact on the audience! Way to go, Gabriella! We are proud of you and your accomplishment for Tesoro del Valle!
We at Tesoro del Valle would like to extend warm wishes to all our moms as they celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday! A mother’s love is truly a special love to experience and we are blessed to have such wonderful moms in our lives. Thank you, Moms, for all you do for your children! Happy Mother’s Day!
Please note: We have tentatively rescheduled the Disaster Drill for Tuesday, May 17th at approximately 8:35 a.m.-9:30 a.m. Should you call the office during that time, you will reach voicemail so please leave a message. Should you arrive at school, please go to the Student Release Gate located at the entrance to Childcare. Our school office staff will be able to assist you! These drills are held twice a year and provide practice for our teachers and students should an emergency arise. Thank you for your patience!
