Dear Parents,

Students need to be in school every day to stay on track. Teachers’ lesson plans are carefully constructed to introduce new concepts, reinforce them with learning activities, and then move on to new skills and ideas. When children aren’t in school, they fall behind. And the more days they miss, the harder it is to catch up. That’s where you come in.

Report In.

Get the Work.

If your child is out unexpectedly, due to illness or other reasons, in addition to contacting the school attendance office, make arrangements with your child’s teachers to pick up a packet of work.

Religious Absences.

How Sick Is Too Sick?

Faking It?

Vacation Plans.

Check Those Appointments.

Finally, remember to show and tell your children that attendance is important—whether it’s as a child in school or as an adult on the job.

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

Parenting requires many judgment calls, including numerous decisions related to schoolwork and school projects. Principals and teachers are always stressing how important it is for parents to be involved, but how much is too much? We all want our children to do well in school. But, sometimes, we might want it too much and end up giving them too much assistance. The problem is, while their grades might look stellar, their self-esteem can suffer. Children are smarter than we sometimes give them credit for.

So what’s a concerned parent to do? How much help is reasonable? What kinds of suggestions or assistance are acceptable? And what do you do if they don’t understand their homework, even after asking you for guidance?

Don’t do it for them.

Guidance is great.

or paper clips, count the total, and, together, divide them into groups of five, six, or seven.

Be encouraging.

Expand their brains.

Finally, know when to call for help. If your child is consistently having trouble with a specific concept, even after you’ve helped explain it to him or her, it’s time to let the teacher know. Chances are yours isn’t the only child in the class who’s confused. In addition to learning the schoolwork, your child will gain some very important knowledge: that it’s smart to ask for help when you don’t understand something.

Dear Parents,

It doesn’t matter if you’re the student, the teacher, or the parent, Parent-Teacher Conferences are bound to cause some anxiety. Yet these one-on-one meetings are priceless opportunities for families to get a better understanding of their children. By preparing well for your meetings with teachers and following up with both your children and their teachers afterward, you can strengthen your children’s school success.

Before the Conference:

Listen.

Ask.

Or are they bored because they understand the material that the rest of the class is struggling with? Are there any troubling issues with any of their classmates?

Bring notes and papers.

During the Conference:

Be on time.

Hire a babysitter.

Take notes.

Keep emotions out of it.

After the Conference:

Talk to your child.

Remember that it’s important for your child to feel positive about learning, the teacher, and the school.

Follow up.

Follow through.

time might be difficult, but remember—your child needs you.

Dear Parents,

Although your children spend hours in school every week, the time they spend at home doing school related work is just as important. By helping your children learn and practice good study habits, you’ll do a lot to help them succeed in school.

Have a set time to settle down:

Take a breather:

Create a study space:

Turn off the distractions:

Teach them responsibility:

Make day-by-day lists:

Get in the "flash card" habit:

From the earliest grades on (all the way through college), students can benefit hugely from using homemade flash cards to learn facts, spelling, and math. Not only does drilling with the cards help cement the knowledge, but the act of writing down the information on the cards in the first place.

Keep a watchful eye:

Dear Parents,

Children can often be delightful. They also can sometimes be deceitful or unkind, bullies or victims. Sometimes the difference can be in the lessons they learn, both at home and at school. Here are some ways to help your children grow up to be respectful and kind, and to have the self-respect they need to make the right choices, both now and in the future.

Trade places.

Face the mirror.

Read up.

Truth or consequences.

No excuses.

Stand strong.

The golden rule.
