Dear Parents,

Making the Right Choices

Children can often be delightful.  They also can sometimes be deceitful or unkind, bullies or victims.  Sometimes the difference can be in the lessons they learn, both at home and at school.  Here are some ways to help your children grow up to be respectful and kind, and to have the self-respect they need to make the right choices, both now and in the future.

Face the mirror.  Too many children are very skilled at being angels in front of teachers or parents and the opposite when adults are not around.  One of the most powerful lessons parents can teach their children is this:  The real you is the way you behave when no one is watching.  Children need to learn to behave well and treat others well because that’s the kind of person they want to be, and because that’s the only way to respect the person they see in the mirror.

No Excuses.  Sometimes, parents are unaware that their children are misbehaving in school until they’re notified by a teacher.  The problem is that parents too often react with denial.  But that doesn’t help anyone, particularly not the child, who learns that he or she can get away with bad behavior at school as long as the parents are fooled.  If you get that call or note from the teacher, swallow your pride, talk to your child, and make an appointment to meet with the teacher.

Stand strong.  It is difficult for children to deal with situations in which their classmates, neighbors, siblings, or friends are behaving in a bad or cruel manner.  Help them be prepared by role-playing ahead of time - act out situations they might face and see how they’d react.  Talk with them about other ways to deal with the peer pressure, and let them know that, while standing up to their friends or peers might temporarily make them less popular with that group, in the long run they will have earned the respect of those whose opinions matter more.

Dear Parents,

Results of the 2008 Resource Specialist Program Parent Suveys:  (This is a program for students with learning disabilities) Fifteen out of fifteen surveys were returned.  Surveys indicated that parents understood the program and felt their children were improving. Comments: “Thank you to all that worked with him.  He has truly improved.”  “My son is definitely benefiting from his RSP program. We wish there were more Mrs. Turks!”  “Thank you for not making our child feel stigmatized.”

SAFETY: Please keep the Aldbury crosswalk (near the Kindergarten yard) clear so students can cross the street safely.  If you are in the line for drive through pick up, please keep your car behind the crosswalk until there is enough room for you to turn right and keep the crosswalk clear.  Students are walking around cars because they can not access the crosswalk and this is a safety concern.

Staff Development:  Our staff development October 31st was excellent.  Kindergarten through third grade teachers participated in DIBELS training for early reading skills and intervention.  Fourth through sixth grade teachers participated in Art Instruction imbedded in the curriculum. Teachers are excited and anxious More ...

Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 11-18-08

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

A student absent from school without a valid excuse three days in one school year, or tardy without a valid excuse in excess of thirty minutes on each day more than three days in one school year, is considered truant. Students who are truant will be reported to the Director of Student Support Service. This is defined by Education Code 48260. Every four weeks schools are required to run attendance reports.  Letters, created by the District School Attendance and Review Board, are mailed to parents to inform them of absences and tardies.  If you receive a letter, I am available to problem solve and try and find solutions to your child’s attendance issues.  It is important that you make every effort to get your children to school on time every day.  Students who exhibit a pattern of excessive absences may be referred to the Santa Clarita School Attendance Review Board (SARB).

Report Cards will be coming home this Friday.  Please be sure to check backpacks.
