Dear Parents,

Last spring parents filled out surveys regarding several aspects of Skyblue Mesa.  I have attached the survey with results.  Site Council compiled the surveys.  Each week I will address one grade level or program and answer concerns and share comments.

Kindergarten Parent Surveys: 21 out of 57 surveys were returned.  Comment: “Parents should sign a sheet when they drop their students off for safety reasons.”  Answer:  I know we do this in Fun for Fours.  In Kindergarten the students are dropped off at the gate and a yard supervisor is there to monitor for ten minutes before class.  Comments: “My child has excelled tremendously. We are very happy with her teacher.”

 

(Parent’s quote:  “I love the morning broadcast what a great way for kids to overcome low self- esteem, low confidence, etc.)

Valet Parent Volunteers Needed

Our morning Valet Program has started off fantastic with many 4^th, 5^th and 6^th graders signing up to volunteer.  We still need some more parent supervisors to help make sure things are running smoothly and safely.  If you can spare thirty minutes any morning from 7:30am-8:00am, please leave a note for Sandy Howard in the office.  Remember, you don’t have to be the parent of a Student Valet to help!

Volunteer TB Test

The law requires that VOLUNTEERS who have contact with pupils on a regular basis have a valid Mantoux Skin Test (not a chest x-ray) to test for a lack of presence of tuberculosis.  If you are in contact with the children in your child’s classroom (or another classroom) as a part of your volunteer “assignment”, you must submit a negative Mantoux test to our school office for our records. 

Individuals with a documented positive skin test must present a certificate from a health provider that they are free of communicable disease at least every four years.  The health provider may or may not choose to use a diagnostic chest

X-ray for people with previously known positive skin tests.

Mantoux tests are given locally by First Care on Soledad Canyon Road near Bouquet Junction, or by your physician.  The individual volunteer(s) must cover expense of the test, as the school district cannot cover the cost.

Estimados Padres,

La pasada Primavera Uds. llenaron una encuesta relacionada con algunos aspectos acerca de Skyblue Mesa.  Yo voy agregar la información con el resultado de la encuesta.  El Consejo Escolar reviso los comentarios.  Cada semana yo voy a hablar sobre un nivel de grado o programa y contestar preguntas y compartir comentarios.

Encuesta a Padres con niños en Kindergarten: 21 de 57 fueron devueltos.  Comentario: “Los padres deben firmar la lista cuando ellos dejen los niños, por razones de seguridad.” Respuesta: Yo se que lo hacemos en Pre School para el programa de “Fun for Fours” pero en Kindergarten los Padres dejen los niños en la reja y un supervisor del campo los cuida por 10 minutos antes de empezar las clases.  Comentario: “Mi hija ha adelantado enormemente.  Nosotros estamos muy contento con su maestra.”

 

(Padres comentaron: “Me encanta el programa de noticias en la mañana, es un gran manera de niños de baja confianza en si mismo y que son tímidos, estimulen su confianza, etc.)

Un recuerdo: almuerzos (lunch) cuesta $2.75 este ano. 

 

Necesitamos Padres Voluntarios Para el Programa de Valet

Nuestro Programa de Valet de la mañana ha empezado fantástico con muchos alumnos de 4^to, 5^to y 6^to  grado firmando como voluntarios.  Nosotros seguimos necesitando más Padres Supervisores para que ayuden a que todo sea fácil y seguro.  Si Ud. puede dar 30 minutos cualquier mañana de 7:30am-8:00am, por favor deje una nota en la oficina a Sandy Howard.  Recuerde Ud no tiene que ser padre de un estudiante Valet para ayudar!

Prueba de Tuberculosis para Voluntarios

La ley exige que personas que trabajen directamente con alumnos tiene que tener los resultados de Mantoux Skin Test (no un rayo x de los pulmones.)  Si vas a tener contacto con alumnas en cualquier clase, tenemos que tener prueba del resultado del Mantoux test.

Individuos que han recibido resultados positivos tiene que presentar el certificado de un proveedor de salud, (doctor) un certificado que indica que no

tengas enfermedades contagiosas.  Esta prueba se tiene que hacer cada 4 anos.

Las pruebas de Matoux se dan localmente en First Care en la calle Soledad Canyon Road cerca de Bouquet Junction o por su doctor,  Voluntarios tiene que pagar por esta prueba.  El distrito no va pagar para estas pruebas.  Gracias.

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

I am happy to report that Skyblue’s STAR  test scores went up 14 points this year!  This is due in part to our strong parent support with attendance, homework and assisting in the classrooms. It is also due to the in class interventions that teachers are doing every day.  For those students scoring at below basic and far below basic we will be offering before school and after school intervention programs as well.  Goal Setting conferences are coming up and teachers will explain beginning of the year assessments, STAR results, and will work with you to set goals for the year. This is a good time to begin to write questions you would like to discuss with the teacher.

 

Results of the First Grade Parent Surveys: 39 out of 69 surveys were returned.  Comment: “First grade has too much homework.” Answer: The amount of homework given is what the average child should be able to complete in a reasonable amount of time. If your child is spending a great deal of time on homework, please talk with the teacher.  Comments: “Great communication from teacher!” “I believe that the school looks at the best interest of our children. My child feels safe.”  “Administrator and teachers have high standards for student’s behavior.”

Dear Parents,

Thank you for doing such a great job with drive through drop-off and pick up.  Your cooperation has made this very smooth this year.  I appreciate your patience.  We have lots of new volunteer students and parents and your thank you and smiles really help!

 

Our enrichment classes are in full swing and the students are having a great time!

 

Comments from the Second Grade Parent Surveys form May 2008: 29 out of 59 surveys were returned.  Comment: “Why aren’t the kids allowed to eat in the new MPR on cold, rainy, windy days?” Answer: If the weather is too hot, too cold and especially very windy or raining the students do eat inside the new MPR.  We have inclement weather guidelines set by the district.  Comment: “My child was not challenged.”  Answer: The teacher is always available to address concerns about curriculum in the classroom. If you have concerns, please contact the teacher.  During the week of September 22^nd, we will be having Goal Setting Conferences.  This is the time the teacher and you will set up goals for your student. Comment: “Teachers are accessible and responsive to parents’/children’s needs and concerns.  Wonderful teachers!”

Classroom Interruptions

In an effort to cut down on classroom interruptions, we are asking you to help us by making every effort to set your day’s plans with your children before sending them to school each day.

Every time a request is made for a message to be relayed to a student or teacher in a classroom, the secretary in the office must relay the message by calling the classroom on the intercom system.  This call goes into the classroom, and since there is no way to determine if it is a time that would not disrupt learning in the classroom, sometimes these calls are made during important lessons or tests.  These calls are the ones we are trying to eliminate. 

Therefore we are asking you to help us by:

·         Not calling the office to relay messages to your child unless it is an emergency.

·         Informing your children before they leave for school in the morning of any plans for after school that may need to know such as:

• Who is picking them up after school?
• Do they need to walk home?
• Who are they to go home with?
• Do they need to go to day care?
• What do they do if it rains?
• Do they have their homework?

·         Making sure lunch is taken care of by:

• Seeing that they take their lunch with them to school.

• Checking if they have enough money for that day or on their account.

These are a few suggestions that can help us to eliminate classroom interruptions and keep that important instructional time uninterrupted.  Thank you for your anticipated cooperation in this matter!

 

Office Machine Training

Volunteers cannot use the office machines if they have not been trained.  Wendy Mc Haddad will do training on Mondays at 8:00am.

 

Fifth Annual Vendor Faire

Principals, PTO, All School Staff, Parents, Family members and especially students come to the Central Kitchen to an “Open House” and sample new products and discover what’s “cool to eat @ my school”.  It will be, Wednesday, September 24^th, from 2:30-5:00pm at the Central Kitchen, 25210 Anza Drive, Valencia.

Estimados Padres,

Gracias por su gran trabajo en dejar y recoger los niños.  Su cooperación ha hecho esto muy fácil este ano.  Yo aprecio su paciencia.  Nosotros tenemos muchos nuevos estudiantes y padres voluntarios y las gracias y sonrisas de Uds. realmente ayuda!

 

Nuestras clases de enriquecimiento están en completo movimiento y los estudiantes están teniendo un buen tiempo!

 

Comentarios de la Encuesta a los Padres en Segundo Grado en Mayo 2008: 29 de 59 respondieron.  Comentario: “Porque  los niños no pueden comer en el nuevo M.P.R. en días fríos, de lluvia y con vientos?” Respuestas: Si el tiempo es muy caliente, muy frió y especialmente de mucho viento o lluvia los niños comerán dentro de el nuevo M.P.R.  Nosotros tenemos una guía a seguir cuando el tiempo es inclemente marcado por el Distrito.  Comentario: “Mi hijo no es estimulado.”  Respuesta: Los maestros siempre están disponibles a hablar sobre cualquier asunto relacionado con el programa del salón de clase.  Si Ud. tiene alguna preocupación, por favor póngase en contacto con la maestra.  Durante la semana del 22 de Septiembre, nosotros tendremos Conferencias de Posición de Metas.  En ese tiempo la maestra y Ud podrán hablar sobre la meta para su estudiante. Comentario: “Los maestros son accesibles y sensitivos a las necesidades de Padres y niños.  Maravillosos Maestros!”

Interrupciones en Salones de Clases

En un esfuerzo de cortar las interrupciones en los salones, nosotros estamos pidiendo su ayuda para que haga un esfuerzo y haga sus planes con sus hijos/as antes de mandarlo a la escuela cada día.  Cada vez se requiere darle un mensaje a un estudiante o maestra, la secretaria en la oficina tiene que llamar al salón por el sistema de intercomunicación.  Esta llamada llega al salón por un altavoz, y sinceramente no hay manera de determinar si estamos interrumpiendo tiempo de aprendizaje, algunas veces estas llamadas se hacen durante lecciones importantes o exámenes o incluso cuando hay alguien invitado hablar.  Estas llamadas son las que estamos tratando de eliminar.  Por eso nosotros le estamos pidiendo a Uds. su ayuda para:

·         No llame a la oficina para transmitirle mensajes a sus niños si no es una emergencia.

·         Infórmele a sus hijos antes de salir para la escuela de cualquier plan después de la escuela que ellos deben saber, cosas como:

·         Quien va a recoger después de la clase?

·         Ellos necesitan caminar a la casa?

·         Con quien ellos van a la casa?

·         Ellos necesitan ir al Day Care?

·         Que van hacer si llueve?

·         Ellos tiene su tarea?

·         Asegúrese de tomar cuidado del almuerzo (lunch):

·         Vea que ellos lleven su lunch con ellos a la escuela.

·         Chequee que tenga suficiente dinero en su cuenta para el día.

 

Estas son algunas sugerencias que pueden ayudarnos a eliminar las interrupciones en los salones de clases y mantener el importante tiempo de instrucciones.  Gracias por anticipado por su cooperación en este asunto.

Dear Parents,

I hope you will take advantage of Goal Setting Conferences this week.  This is your time to help set goals for your student for the year.  Sometimes you have information that is very helpful to the teacher. We try to always work as a team so that together we can to do what is best for your student.

Comments from the Third Grade Parent Surveys Form May 2008: Twenty-one out of fifty-eight surveys were returned.  Comment: “I think our district could do a better job at removing junk food at our schools. If you don’t sell cookies, chips and slushies at school then the children will not buy them.  This is not the parent’s responsibility – they are at school and under your care and supervision.” Response: Saugus School District has implemented an extensive Wellness Policy.  All food that is dispensed by our food service must meet very strict guidelines in terms of fat and sugar content. A fresh salad bar is offered every day and foods must be baked rather than fried. A copy of the Wellness Policy is available in the main office or you can look on the web site and speak directly to SCV Food Services if you would like specific information about a certain item.  Comment: “We are new in the area (school &
school district) but the school provided us more than expected.”  “My son’s teacher was very motivating and enthusiastic.  Great communication.  Teacher was very knowledgeable and experienced.”
