Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 4-29-08
From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents,
I have attached an information sheet on STAR testing. We will begin testing next Monday, May 5th for Grades 2-6. Please be sure students get a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast. It is very important that they be on time as testing begins shortly after school starts. Our entire curriculum is aligned with the state standards and I know our students will do well. Thank you for your support.

Dear Parents,
Deputy Pat Rissler spoke with Skyblue Mesa’s PTO at our last Board Meeting regarding the Santa Clarita School Block Watch Program. Surrounding neighbors have been mailed letters and brochures. The following is what the letter says:
“The Santa Clarita Valley Station is in need of your assistance with the School Block Watch Program. The program is simple; neighbors in the area of a school keep a watchful eye on their neighborhood school for any criminal activity.
The program would essentially follow along the same lines as a Neighborhood Watch Program. Simple stated, if there is a crime occurring, about to occur, or suspicious persons hanging around the schools, please call the Santa Clarita Valley Station and report the activity for a response by a patrol unit. We need help of the community to protect school property and this proactive approach will help increase the level of safety in and around our neighborhoods. Soon, you will see signs around your school, similar to the one on the attached handout.
To participate in the School Block Watch Program all you need to do is keep a watchful eye on the school near you, report to the station any illegal activity you see by calling (661) 255-1121 and, if an emergency is in progress call 911.”

Dear Parents,
Thank you for a wonderful Staff Appreciation Week. PTO gave us a delicious luncheon on Wednesday. All the cards, flowers, and breakfast goodies made us feel special and appreciated.
Parent surveys go home today. There is one per student. Our Site Council carefully reads these surveys. We value your input which helps us make decisions regarding various aspects of our school. If your child turns in a completed survey in the Old MPR on Thursday or Friday morning, they will get a prize.
We have a few more days of STAR Testing for third grade and makeup testing. This was the best year yet in terms of student attendance and students being on time. Thank you parents! I really appreciate your effort!

Dear Parents,
With just four weeks left of school we have a lot to accomplish. Teachers teach until the very last day! This year our attendance raffle will be June 12th. Each month students who have perfect attendance get a raffle ticket. Tickets will be pulled on June 12th. Students must be in school to win prizes. I have a bicycle and lots of sports equipment to raffle off. It should be a very exciting assembly.

Mrs. D. Day – June 6th
After thirty-eight years of service with the Saugus Union School District, Mrs. Dagodag, one of Skyblue’s terrific Kindergarten teachers, will be retiring this June. We are compiling a memory book to present to her on June 6th,
“Mrs. D. Day”. If you have any special memories, please jot them down, or if you have pictures you would like to add to this book, please bring them to Skyblue by May 30th in care of Mrs. Phelan. (Pictures will not be returned)
A Special Thank You
Astrocamp Scholarships have been filled. Through your generosity students will be able to attend Astrocamp. Skyblue Mesa has the best parents and staff!

Dear Parents,
I was sent the following email that I thought was worth sharing with you. . . .
What do you make?
The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.
One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He
argued, 'What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option
in life was to become a teacher?'
He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers:
'Those who can, do... Those who can't, teach.
To stress his point he said to another guest; 'You're a teacher,
Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?'
Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, 'You
want to know what I make? (She paused for a second, and then began...)
- I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.
- I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor winner.
- I make kids wonder.
- I make them question.
- I make them apologize and mean it.
- I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions.
- I teach them to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding isn't everything.
- I make them read, read, read.
I make them show all their work in math. They use their God given brain, not the man-made calculator.
- I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know about English while preserving their unique cultural identity.
- I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe.
- I make my students stand, placing their hand over their heart to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, One Nation Under God, because we
live in the United States of America. - Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.
(Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.)
'Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant.... You want to know what I make?
I MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
