Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 4-1-08

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

I would like to invite you to our open house this Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00pm.  We will begin in the new MPR with the announcement of the Science Fair winners.  Each class made a beautiful basket stuffed with goodies for our PTO auction which will also be in the MPR.  Classroom walls are covered with student art and special projects.  Let your child be your tour guide as you view the various displays. If you have neighbors who will be coming to Skyblue next year be sure to invite them.  This is a fun family night and we look forward to seeing you here. Have a wonderful Spring break.

Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 4-15-08

Abajo se encuentra el boletin en Espanol.

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

I have had some questions about the tardy and absent letters that go home each month and would like to explain the process.  The following is an excerpt from the Parent Handbook:

Attendance/Truancy/Tardiness

Students must be in school in order to succeed.  Parents are expected to ensure that children are in school daily, on time and ready to learn.

Minimum Minutes

The following schedule of instructional minutes is:

Kindergarten                200 minutes

Grades 1-2                   290 minutes

Grades 3-6                   340 minutes

A student misses essential learning when absent, therefore, students are expected to makeup missed assignments.  If parents keep students out of school for any reason other than illness or justifiable personal reasons requested in advance, that gives a message that school is not important.  (EC 48205) Saugus Union School District Board policy states:  “Students absent from school 25 or more days may be considered for retention.”

Tardiness-interferes with student learning, and interrupts other students.   If your student is late, please send a note of explanation.  Unexcused tardiness may require the student to makeup lost learning time during recess, lunch or after school.

Absences-Every absence must be verified.  Parents must send a note or call the school office.  Regardless of the method you use to notify the school, the following information should be included:

  • Your child’s name and teacher’s name
  • Date of the absence
  • Exact nature of the illness or reason for absence
  • Your name and signature

Truancy (EC 48260)-A pupil absent from school without valid excuse three days in one school year or tardy without valid excuse in excess of 30 minutes on each of more than three days in one school year is considered truant.  Students who are truant will be reported to the Director of Student Support Service and may be referred to a School Attendance Review Team (SART), or to the Santa Clarita School Attendance Review Board (SARB).  Students who exhibit a pattern or excessive absences and/or tardiness will be refereed to SARB.

When your student has 3 unexcused absences or 3 tardies over 30 minutes, you will receive a letter from the office.  This letter is a form letter created by the School Attendance Review Board which states the Education Code.  I am mandated to send this letter.  If attendance problems continue, then a school meeting is conducted where the parent and student sign a school contract.  If the problem still continues then a meeting is conducted with the School Attendance Review Board.  Our attendance records, letters and contracts may be audited each year.  It is very important that we follow these procedures.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

From the Principal’s Desk

We have a few short weeks until STAR testing.  This testing is for Grades 2-6.  Testing will begin May 5th and continue until May 16th.  Students will be tested first thing in the morning and will finish before lunch.  Please make every effort to get your children to school on time. Please do not schedule any morning appointments on these days.

Leadership teachers will be out during morning Valet Drop Off.  Thank you to all parents who are following the rules and keeping our children and parent volunteers safe.  Please remember the rules have been set up by the sheriff and it is the responsibility of the volunteers and yard supervisor to ensure that these rules are followed.  It has been reported to me that some parents are still using their cell phones even after several reminders.  Using the Valet Drop Off is a privilege.  Those who choose not to follow the rules choose to park outside the school and walk their children on campus. Thank you for your cooperation.
