From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

You are all invited to our new MPR opening February 20th at 8:45am.  This ceremony is for parents and district personnel.  Students will be attending a separate ceremony.   We will showcase the multimedia stage and new cafeteria.  Hope to see you!

Here is a news clip from Firm, Fair & Consistent by The Parent Institute -

Most parents want their children to succeed.  But sometimes, they can unintentionally prevent their children’s success.  Here are some “don’ts” to remember:

  • Don’t belittle your child’s feelings.  What may not seem important to you could be a big deal to him.
  • Don’t assume your child isn’t trying.  Get out of the habit of always telling your child to try harder.
  • Don’t have unrealistic expectations.  Children get discouraged when they try to work beyond their own abilities.
  • Don’t take over.  Solving a problem for your child tells him that he’s not capable of doing it himself
  • Don’t allow your child to blame others.  If your child doesn’t take responsibility for his mistakes, he can’t learn from them.
  • Don’t make praise cheap.  Too much praise to a child becomes meaningless.  Praise about three times as much as you criticize.

Dear Parents,

Parenting and Play-Doh

Peggy Adkins, one of our talented Character Counts trainers, tells the story of when she adopted a cat.

Each of the cat’s original owners was interviewed and, when Peggy finally got the animal, she had to sign a document that listed 23 things to do and 17 things not to do to raise a happy, healthy cat. Over the next several months, she received phone calls to confirm that her family was doing what they were supposed to do and refraining from doing what they were not supposed to do.

As the mother of two adopted children, Peggy marveled at the fact that she got better training and follow-up about her cat than her children. Although raising happy, healthy, decent children is vastly more complicated and important than raising pets, there’s no manual for child-raising, not even a list of dos and don’ts.

To make that point in her presentations, she uses Play-Doh in different sizes and colors, pointing out that, like children, no two pieces are alike and that each one can be molded into infinitely unique shapes.

"Indent it with your finger," she says, "touch it with your fingernail, and then press it against your bare arm. Notice that every hair leaves a mark. Now press it against the Sunday comics; it will mirror the pictures. And if you roll it on a table, all kinds of bits and particles become embedded in the substance, almost impossible to remove.”

"That’s what makes parenting so important and difficult. Every thing a child touches makes an impression."

This is Michael Josephson reminding you that character counts.

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

Conference letters will come home today. The following are some helpful suggestions for having successful Parent-Teacher Conferences taken from National Association of Elementary School Principals.

Having Successful Parent-Teacher Conferences

It doesn’t matter if you’re the student, the teacher or the parent, parent-teacher conferences are bound to cause some anxiety.  Yet these one-on-one meetings are priceless opportunities for families to get a better understanding of their children.  By preparing well for your meetings with teachers and following up with both your children and their teachers afterward, you can strengthen your children’s school success.

Before the Conference:

Listen.  Any time you hear your child talking about something he or she is doing really well in or is having trouble with, either with school work or classmates make a note of it.  When it’s time for the conference with the teacher, you’ll have a ready-made list of things to discuss.

Ask.  When it’s time to schedule the conference with the teacher, sit down with your child and ask him or her what you should discuss with the teacher. Encourage your children to open up and tell you what it’s like for them in the classroom.

Bring notes and papers.  Write down questions you want to address with the teacher.  Bring copies of any assignments you have questions about.

During the Conference

Be on time.  Schools tightly schedule parent-teacher conferences because there’s only so much time available and dozens of families to see.  Show up at least a few minutes early.

Hire a babysitter.  It’s important to make sure that the time you have with the teacher is as productive as possible.  Having children in the room is distracting.

Take notes.  In addition to presenting the questions and concerns you brought to the meeting, make sure to take notes about what the teacher is telling you about your child.

Keep emotions out of it.  It is always difficult to hear that your “angel” or “young Einstein” isn’t exactly the person you thought he or she was in the classroom.  Keep your cool and bear in mind that the teacher is offering constructive criticism.

After the Conference

Talk to your child.  Sit down with your child and tell him or her what you and the teacher discussed.

Follow up.  If there were important issues that need to be dealt with, such as finding a tutor or getting counseling for your child, make sure to follow up in writing with the teacher soon after the conference.

Follow through.  Once you know what you can do at home to help your child succeed in school, make sure to actually do it.  It’s understandable that finding the time might be difficult, but remember-your child needs you.

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

You hear a lot about “family time,” but what does it really mean, and why is it important?  Learn the essentials by reading these tips:

TV time, surprisingly, can be turned into family time.  You wouldn’t think that watching a TV show or movie with your children could be counted as family time but, with a little bit of creative effort, it can be.  Use commercial breaks to mute the sound and talk about what you’re watching.

Turn everyday chores into a time to bond.  The key to making quality time out of the most ordinary everyday chores (like cooking, picking up, cleaning, and doing laundry) is to turn them into opportunities to talk with your children.

Remember to chat, rather than interrogate.  The quickest way to shut down good family time is to turn it into a type of police interrogation.  Certainly there may be times when you need to prod your child for answers about things that are concerning you, but make sure that during casual family time together you keep the “interviewing” to a minimum.

Homework time can be a time to bond, too.  Provide encouragement just by being with them while they work and being available if they have questions or need extra help.

One-on-one time is extra special.  If you have more than one child, try to find time each week to do something special alone with each of them.  It can be as

simple as a walk after dinner or an out-of-the ordinary errand.

Split households need to unite in their commitment.  If you and your child’s other parent live separately, try to make an agreement that each parent will work on spending quality family time with each child each week.  Discuss how quality time means interacting with the child, not just being in the same household.

Games never go out of style.  Board games and card games are ideal ways to get families together to relax and have fun as a group.  Look for games that appeal to your child’s interest and age level.

Yes, you’ve got a lot to do-and so do your children.  But when you think about it, there’s really no better way to spend your time than by strengthening the bonds between your family members. The pay-off is priceless.

Del Escritorio de la Principal

Estimados Padres,
