Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 8-28-07

 From the Principal’s Desk

We had a great first week of school. The teachers worked hard to have beautiful bulletin boards and centers ready.  Office staff has been working diligently to get class lists and student records in order.  Custodians have the school polished and shining.  Liz McCormack, PTO President, gave a great welcome and her team did a beautiful job with refreshments.  Wendy McHaddad had the Valet Drop Off in full swing.

Test scores are in and Skyblue Mesa had another great year.  You will be receiving your child’s results at back to school night.

Well, we are off and running and hope you will jump in as partners.  These elementary years will fly by and they are probably the most crucial to your child’s success.  Your involvement can really make the difference.  Hope to see you all at Back to School Night!

Office Machine Training

Volunteers cannot use the office machines if they have not been trained.  Wendy Mc Haddad will do the training on Fridays at 8:00am.

Rashes in the School Setting

If any student comes to school with a rash of any kind, that student will be sent to the Health Office.  The student’s parent/guardian is then called to pick the student up from school.  That student may not return to school without a written note from a physician or other licensed health care practitioner stating the nature of the rash, that the rash is
non-communicable and/or that appropriate treatment has been given, if applicable.  We are trying to protect the health of all students and staff when we exclude students with potential communicable diseases.  No one at the school site can diagnose what a particular rash might be.  Only a licensed medical practitioner can diagnose.  Thank you for understanding.

Volunteer TB Test

The law requires that VOLUNTEERS who have contact with pupils on a regular basis have a valid Mantoux Skin Test (not a chest x-ray) to test for a lack of presence of tuberculosis.  If you are in contact with the children in your child’s classroom (or another classroom) as a part of your volunteer “assignment”, you must submit a negative Mantoux test to our school office for our records.

Individuals with a documented positive skin test must present a certificate from a health provider that they are free of communicable disease at least every four years.  The health provider may or may not choose to use a diagnostic chest

X-ray for people with previously known positive skin tests.

Mantoux tests are given locally by First Care on Soledad Canyon Road near Bouquet Junction, or by your physician.  The individual volunteer(s) must cover expense of the test, as the school district cannot cover the cost.

No Dogs on Campus

For the safety and health of our students and staff, dogs are not allowed on Skyblue Mesa’s campus, driveway, parking lot, or in front of the school.  This is mandated by the Saugus Union School District. Thank you.

From the Principal’s Desk

Thank you parents for attending Back to School Night.  We value your support and want to work with you to give your child the best possible education.  I have gone over the results of the STAR testing results for grades 3-6 and am setting up intervention classes for students who scored basic and below in Math or English Language Arts.  Please remember that this is just one measure of your child’s ability.  I will be talking to teachers and looking at beginning of the year assessments to identify students at risk.  Teachers will be discussing student progress and academic intervention programs at your Goal Setting Conference.  These programs will be starting in the next couple of weeks.  Statistics have shown that the two things parents can do that greatly impact student learning are making sure their children do there homework every night and attend school daily.   I have purchased planners for every third through sixth grade student so they can write their homework down each night.  The planner can also be used for parent and teacher communication.  Additionally, every teacher has e-mail and voice mail for your convenience.

I will be giving out dog tags again each month for perfect attendance.  Every time your child gets a dog tag they will also get a raffle ticket towards a prize at the end of the year. The spaghetti dinner/bingo night was a great success.  Thank you PTO for the delicious dinner and entertaining bingo game.  We appreciate all your hard work and the pounds and pounds of spaghetti you cooked!

Computer lab, music, library, and P.E. will begin the week of September 11th.

Thank you for your patience at after school pick up.  As teachers get to know you and your children, the process will become quicker.  The most important thing is the safety of your children.

Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 9-11-07

 From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

Each May we do a parent survey to get feed back about our programs.  I have attached a copy of the survey and will respond to parent comments by grade level in the next few newsletters.  Kindergarten parent comment, “You need to fix the after school Valet Program.  There should be no parking on the side streets where cars wait to enter the school and there should be no left hand turn into the parking lot.”  Response: The sheriff designed the Valet Program.  There is no stopping, parking or pick up on Hardesty.  I will ask the sheriff to monitor this area.  There is parking along Aldbury.  There is no left hand turn into the parking lot at dismissal; however, left hand turns are permissible in the morning.  Parent comment, “We are very pleased with our daughter’s progress throughout her first year at Skyblue.  She is offered so much in school that I never had and she has learned so much.”

Teachers are completing their beginning of the year assessments.  I will be setting up Intervention Classes and Homework Club in the next couple of weeks.  Students will continue to have morning recess on the playground and lunch recess inside the air conditioned MPR.  PE classes are also held inside.  .  Grade level teachers plan together once a month and discuss student progress and upcoming units of instruction.

Dear Parents,

I survived disappearing during the magic show and yes there were a few students that were worried.  Thank you for supporting our magic night! Parent Conference invitations have gone home.  Please make every effort to attend.  Teachers will be explaining various programs that will assist students struggling in math or reading.  If you need a translator please let your teacher know.

From the 2007 parent survey: First Grade Parent Comment: “I am concerned that the gates are left open.”  Response: “Our gates will be replaced with security gates during our fall break.  The new gates will be closed at all times. The gates that are here now are not panic gates, which mean they do not open both ways.  They must be kept open to meet fire safety codes. Parent comment: Skyblue Mesa has teachers that really care about doing a good job.  I think the commitment to academic excellence is the highlight of this school.” Response: I could not agree with you more. Skyblue Mesa teachers work diligently to do the best job they can for our students.

Please mark your calendars.  On October 22nd, at the PTO Meeting at 7:00pm, Donna Nuzzi from the City of Santa Clarita, will be sharing what you can do at home to be prepared in the event of a disaster.  I will be explaining Skyblue’s Disaster Preparedness Plan and Gary Scott will also be on hand to show you some kits you can purchase for your home or office.  Please come and find out what happens when students are at school during a disaster and what you can do at home.

Dear Parents,

Parent conferences are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week.  Teachers will be working with you to set goals for the year.  They will be discussing various programs and learning opportunities that they feel might benefit your student.  Please make every effort to attend.  We will have a translator available if you requested one on your invitation.

Students may not wear Croc shoes to school and girls may not wear makeup of any kind to school.  Please look at the second page of your parent handbook for our student dress code.

Comments from the May 2007 Parent Survey

Second Grade Parent Comment: “P.E. time is only once a week, could it be twice?” Response:  We have a P.E. Specialist that works with the students once a week.  Teachers provide the additional P.E minutes that are required. Parent Comment: “Second grade curriculum could be more challenging, especially the math, although, the teacher responded when I requested more difficult work.”  Response: if you feel your student needs to have more challenging work please contact the teacher by e-mail, telephone voice mail or note.  Parent Comment: “Teachers were accessible, responded quickly to my communication and concerns.  My son looked forward to
attending school daily.” Response: Our teachers try very hard to be available to parents.  It is important that students love school!
