Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 5-1-07

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

We start standardized testing this Wednesday and it will run through Friday May, 11th.  Grades 2 through 6 will be testing.  Thank you for not scheduling doctor’s appointments during the morning hours.  We will begin testing right at 8:15AM each morning.  Late students will not be admitted to class once testing begins.  They will sit in the office until the testing period is finished.  Please be sure to feed your students a good breakfast and encourage early bedtimes.

This week is Staff Appreciation Week.  Each person at Skyblue Mesa plays an integral part in educating the whole child.  I am so pleased to have such a high quality, caring and conscientious staff.  Students have made beautiful cards and we will be having a staff luncheon and goodies provided by PTO.  Thank you to all the parents that made this possible!

Dear Parents,

Parent surveys are going home today.  There is one survey for each child.  The grade level is at the top.  Please fill them out and return them to your child’s teacher.  Your child will receive a special prize for turning in their survey.  Site Council compiles the surveys and I will report our findings to you in my Tuesday letter.  We look very closely at your responses and comments.  This helps us to know how well programs are working for you and More ...

Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 5-15-07

 From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

The Sheriff and City Traffic Team were out on Wednesday, May 9th, to check our Valet Program and look at traffic concerns on Hardesty Avenue.  They told me when schools in the Santa Clarita Valley are starting the Valet Program; they send them to Skyblue Mesa because we do an exceptional job at keeping students safe and following the Valet Drop Off Guidelines.  This is in part due to the incredible parent volunteers that help facilitate the program.  One area that needs improvement is the area on Hardesty Avenue between the two school driveways.  There is to be no stopping, parking, drop off, or pick up in this area.  I have tried to be out there and tell this to parents over the last week.  The Sheriff will be out there several times to monitor this.   Additionally, please do not park on the school side of Hardesty between Aldbury and the school driveway.  This interferes with the flow of traffic during Kindergarten pick up from 11:20-11:30AM and after school pick up 2:00-3:00PM.  Thank you for your cooperation.  We want all our children to be safe.

Rose Diaz, School Board Member, came to Skyblue Mesa on Wednesday, May 9th, Day of the Teacher, and gave each teacher a beautiful pin on behalf of Saugus Union School District.  Thank you Mrs. Diaz, our teachers felt so special.

Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 5-22-07

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

Raising a child means more than helping him or her grow up healthy and happy.  It’s important that, by the time they’re ready to leave home, children have learned to be self-sufficient and responsible.  Those kinds of lessons take an entire childhood to learn, but they’re among the most important legacies you can pass on to your children.  Here are some ways to start:

Make them Calendar Girls (and Boys).  Give your child his or her own calendar.  Have children mark when a test or project is due, or when a sports or group activity is scheduled.  Each child’s calendar should be posted in a visible spot and get them in the habit of checking it every day.

Keeping Track.  As tempting as it is to bail out your children if they forget their lunch or homework or put off an assignment until too late, those mistakes can be excellent tools to teach responsibility.  If your child needs to borrow lunch money, make sure it is paid back from his or her own savings.

Helping Others.  No matter what your child’s situation in life, there always are others in greater need.  Get your child involved in helping those less fortunate by working through community, school, or religious groups that focus on community service.

Pet Smarts.  Taking care of the family pet is an excellent way to learn responsibility.  Your children need to know that their pets depend on them.

Get to Work.
Assign weekly chores to everyone in the house, rotating them so that, eventually, everyone has a turn at doing the dishes, putting way laundry, and taking out the trash.

Save for the Future.  From their very first birthday money, teach them to set aside a certain amount for the future.  A good rule of thumb is to put half away for savings and save half for spending.

Finally, remember that the only way to teach your children responsibility is to model the behavior yourself.  Make sure they know that they can depend on you to follow through on promises.  Help them see that you value your contributions to your job, your community, and your family.
