Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 10-10-06
From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents,
I hope you had a restful week with your children. We are looking forward to lots of learning between now and winter break. Next week I will be meeting with each teacher for their Professional Planning Conference. During this meeting I will discuss each student’s progress and goals that were set at the Goal Setting Conference. Teachers will share with me any concerns they have or concerns you may have about student progress. We will also discuss all intervention strategies that are in place to make sure we are meeting the needs of each student. This helps me to support the teachers as they work with your children.
I am also in the process of observing teachers. Saugus Union School District has a rigorous evaluation process. Each new teacher is formally observed four times a year for two consecutive years. Tenured teachers are observed two times a year every other year. I meet with each teacher for a pre-conference before the observation and a post conference after the observation. This gives me the opportunity to share with the teachers what I see during the lesson and the opportunity to reflect on their teaching. It is wonderful to work with such a professional, conscientious group of teachers. I am always thrilled to see such good teaching going on in the classrooms. I am excited to share that we have five teachers working on their Master’s Degree this year! Have a great week!

Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 10-17-06
Dear Parents,
We are getting ready for construction of the MPR. Our field area was fenced over the break. Students will still be able to play on the new playground. They will play one week on the big playground then the next on the lower playground. This way they will get a chance to play on the grass field and on the play equipment over a two-week period. The construction will continue for approximately eighteen months. The construction area is behind fencing. It is very important during construction that students be supervised at all times. There is no supervision of students until 7:35am. Please do not drop off students before this time unless they are in morning math intervention that starts at 7:30am. I will be calling parents if students are dropped off too early. For your convenience we do have before school child care that opens at 6:30am.
I have attached the guidelines for before school valet drop off and after school drive through pick up. If you are using these programs please read the guidelines and follow the rules. This is for the safety of our children. The sheriff department designed this program. I will ask the sheriff to be present to assist our parent volunteers and give me feed back about our program.
There is no morning drop off on
Comments from 2006 parent survey:
Third grade: Concerns, “Sad to see that the district does not really have a consistent Fine Arts program, Music/Art/Drama.” At Skyblue Mesa we have a state adopted music program called Share the Music. Mrs. Fredricks, our music specialists, follows the curriculum guide for each grade level. Students have music once a week. Our art program is Arts Attack. Each teacher has access to a video lesson, art posters and curriculum guides. We showcase student artwork during our open house. Each class will do a performance during the year. Last year Kindergarten did the Thanksgiving Play, First Grade, Spring Sing, Second Grade, The Incredible Reindeer Play, Third Grade Santa Clarita the Musical, "Viva La Historia", Fourth Grade, Fourth Grade Hoe Down, Fifth Grade, The 13 Colonies Play, and Sixth Grade works on their promotion ceremony. Additionally, this year we will have drama after school enrichment classes beginning in November. Compliments: “Teachers use all their available resources to help my son.” “Love the staff. We have had such great experiences with all of our teachers. They have dedication and really care about our kids.”
Have a great week!

Skyblue mesa newsletter of 10-24-06
From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents,
American children are smoking, drinking and using drugs at younger ages than ever before. A recent study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that more than half of all eighth graders had tried alcohol at least once, and that they had their first drink, on average, at age 11. Marijuana use also continues to soar among preteens. The use of inhalants, cocaine, and other illegal drugs by children is also on the rise.
- Start Early: Begin in the early elementary school years to talk about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse
- Build self-esteem: No matter their age, your children need to hear that you love them.
- Encourage healthy activities: Children who are involved in creative, healthy activities are less likely to experiment with drugs out of boredom.
- Get help if you suspect a problem: If your child exhibits these, or other signs of possible drug use, get help from the school counselor, your family physician, or a local treatment center.
- Practice what you preach: Never use illegal drugs. If you drink, do so in moderation. Never drive when you have been drinking, and never ride with an impaired driver.
