Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 9-5-06
We have six flag ceremonies during the year where we honor students for displaying good character. Teachers discuss each character in class. I have visited classrooms and have seen writing and artwork that the students have done portraying each character. Last Tuesday students were honored for Responsibility. They received Character Counts bracelets. In September we will focus on Fairness, November will be Caring,` December will be Citizenship, February will be Trustworthiness and April will be Respect. I have attached the Six Pillars of Character and definitions that are appropriate for children for your use at home.
Our Academic Performance Index (API) is 843 for last year’s STAR testing. We met all our growth targets and went up three points from 2004-2005 STAR testing. STAR testing is for grades 2-6 and will begin May 2nd this year. Teachers will be discussing your child’s individual scores at Goal Setting Conference. Invitations are going home today.
We will continue to have minimum days once a month for staff development. This is district wide. This is the time the teachers from each grade level plan together; discuss student achievement, intervention strategies, and enrichment activities. This gives teachers the opportunity to share ideas and has improved our instructional program. These dates are on your school calendar included in the parent handbook. Reminders will be in the Tuesday Letter.
We had our first Site Council meeting. New to the council this year is Wendy Newlands 1st grade parent, Cristina Wyatt 4th and 5th grade parent, and Connie Marrone second grade teacher. Site Council is comprised of ten members: the principal, three teachers, five parents and one classified staff member. The Site Council will meet the fourth Monday of the month. Agendas are posted in the school office. Have a great week!

Skyblue Mesa Newsletter of 9-12-06
From the Principal’s Desk
Yesterday, across the district we took a moment of silence at 8:46 am to remember the victims and the heroes of 911. As I sat and reflected I could not help but think of our children and the great responsibility we have to keep them safe, to nurture them and help them grow into strong, self sufficient, responsible citizens.
Over the past few weeks we have gotten to know your children. Teachers are preparing for Goal Setting Conferences. They will share what they know so far and together with you set goals for the year. We have high expectations for your children and every year they work hard and every year we are so proud of their accomplishments.
Homeside Activities will begin coming home. These are activities that build parent/child communication. Research tells us that if children have frequent meaningful conversations with parents, they will come to their parents when they have problems or concerns in junior high and high school. I applaud those of you who are participating. I know it may feel awkward at first but I think the pay off is well worth the effort.
Valet drop off and drive through pick up are running smoothly. Please remember when you are in the drive through lane parents may not get out of their cars. Please have your child’s belongings next to them so they can manage getting out of the car themselves. There is no cell phone use in the drive through. We need all your attention on keeping our children safe. Our sheriff department set up this program and we must abide by their guidelines.
Enrichment classes will begin in November. There will be three, six week sessions that will include drama, art, legos and sports. Fliers will come home after fall break.
Construction on our new multipurpose room will begin in November. It will be located on the field behind our outside stage. There will be a fence around the construction site. This will allow the children to play safely on the upper playground and the grass area behind the library. Room 28 and room 29, portable classrooms, will be moved next to the library to make room for construction. Our lower playground and kindergarten playground will be refurbished next summer.
Comments from Parent Surveys Grade 1:
First Grade 2006 parent survey comments: 1. “I am proud to have my children attending Skyblue. I have one child that learns easily and one with difficulty. Both children have received an outstanding education at school. The staff clearly cares about their future.” 2. “I would like to see smaller class size for kids who need more attention.” In our K-3 classes there are 20 students and in our 3-6 there are 30 or more. This is set up by the state. Children who need additional help are offered intervention classes before and after school. If a child has a learning disability they receive additional help from our Resource Specialist Program.

Dear Parents,
Today we celebrated Constitution Day. It was established by congress and is a time to teach future generations about the foundation of our democracy. The U.S. Constitution protects the well being of our country and ensures our freedoms. Fifth and sixth grade students prepared a power point explaining the Preamble. This was broadcasted during our morning announcements and can be viewed from the
You may have noticed a fireman on the campus the last few days. He was on fire watch while our fire alarm was being fixed. I am happy to report that our alarm is back in action! Have a great week!

Skyblue Mesa newsletter of 9-26-06
Dear Parents,
The last five and a half weeks have flown by. Students have settled in and teachers are ready to report their progress. Teachers look forward to Goal Setting conference so they can get your input and work with you to give your child the best possible education.
Fall break is next week. It will give us all time to relax and reenergize. There are several small construction projects that will happen over the break. In addition, the grass area behind the outdoor stage will be fenced off in preparation for construction of our new multi purpose room. All construction will happen behind fencing. Trucks and other construction vehicles will enter through the back gate on Aldbury. This gate is located at the back of the grass field. Students will be able to play on the new upper playground and on the grass area behind the library. We will rotate classes through these areas so everyone gets a chance to play in both areas.
Valet drop off and drive through pick up are moving very smoothly thanks to our many parent volunteers and student helpers. There is no cell phone use in the drive through area. This is a directive from the sheriff who set up our program. I have asked Mrs. McHaddad and Mrs. McCormack to please remind parents as they drive through. Thank you for your cooperation. This is for the safety of our children.
Have a wonderful week off with you children!
