Dear Parents,

Studies have found that most children have cheated, or thought about cheating, on schoolwork. While schools battle this issue, there are two important things parents can do to help. First, from the time children are very young, parents must emphasize and reward honest behavior. Second, parents must make sure that their children know that cheating will not be tolerated at home or at school. Here are some more ways parents can stop children from cheating.

Stop schoolwork-related cheating by:

Monitoring writing projects.

Plagiarism—passing off others’ words or ideas as your own—used to mean copying a few lines or paragraphs from an encyclopedia. Today, with the help of the Internet, children can steal entire essays and research papers. Read your children’s assignments before they turn them in. If the writing doesn’t “sound” like theirs, talk with them about how they came up with the ideas.

Believing the teacher. Teachers don’t make accusations of cheating lightly. If the teacher says that your child was cheating, avoid getting defensive. First, get the facts. Then, if necessary, set up a meeting with everyone involved. Finally, establish consequences both for the specific incident and for any “repeat

performances.”

Fighting peer pressure. Peer pressure can be difficult to handle. Children may have a hard time rebuking a friend who asks to copy homework or peek at test answers. Remind your children that it’s

OK to say “no” to their friends. Let them use you as an excuse: “Sorry. My parents would be furious if I let you see my homework.”

Allowing your children to do their own work. Giving your child a little guidance about a school project is fine. Doing even a small bit of the work for them is cheating.

Prohibiting pirating. Not only is it dishonest to download music or copy computer games without paying for them.

Sharing stories. When you read an article in a magazine or newspaper about an honest act—perhaps someone turning in a wallet full of money—share it with your children and talk about how important it is to resist the temptation to keep something that isn’t theirs.

Finally, scrutinize your own behavior. If they see you using office supplies brought home from work, overhear you  talking about subtle ways to cheat on your income taxes, or witness you calling in sick when you’re not, they’ll believe that cheating is OK.

Estimados Padres,

Según los estudios, la mayoría de los niños hacen trampa, o han pensado hacerlo, con las tareas de la escuela. Aunque las escuelas luchan para solucionar este asunto, hay dos cosas importantes que los padres pueden

hacer para ayudar. Primero, desde la niñez temprana, los padres deben enfatizar a sus niños y recompensar

la conducta honesta. Segundo, los padres deben asegurarse de que sus niños comprendan que las trampas no serán toleradas en casa o en la escuela. Las

siguientes son algunas formas para que los padres puedan prevenir que sus niños hagan trampa.

Pare trampas de escuela por medio de: Controlar los trabajos escritos.

El plagio—usar las palabras o ideas de otras personas como las ideas propias—antes significaba copiar algunas líneas o

párrafos de una enciclopedia. Hoy día, con la ayuda del Internet, los niños puede robarse composiciones y trabajos enteros de investigación. Lea los trabajos de sus niños antes de entregarlos en la escuela. Si el trabajo no “suena” como un trabajo original de su niño, converse con él o ella y pregúntele cómo obtuvo sus ideas. Si es necesario, explíquele que el plagio es una forma de robar lo cual puede resultar en notas malas o en la expulsión.

Creerle al maestro. Los maestros no hacen acusaciones de trampa muy fácilmente. Si el maestro dice que su niño hace trampa, evite ponerse defensiva. Primero, obtenga los datos.

Después, si es necesario, establezca una reunión con todas las personas involucradas. Finalmente, establezca consecuencias tanto para el incidente

específico y como para cualquier “repetición.”

Luchar contra las presiones de los amigos. Las presiones de los amigos pueden resultar difíciles de controlar. Los niños pueden tener dificultades en

reprochar a un amigo que pide copiar las tareas o una mirada a las respuestas de una prueba. Recuérdele a sus niños que está bien decirle “no” a sus amigos. Dígales que usen a usted como la excusa: “Disculpa, pero mis padres estarían furiosos si supieran que te dejé ver mis tareas.”

Dejar que sus niños hagan su propio trabajo.  Está bien si usted guía a su niño en cuanto a un proyecto escolar. Pero si usted hace aún una pequeña

parte del trabajo esto sería trampa.

Prohibir las ediciones piratas.

Obtener música o copiar juegos

electrónicos por el Internet sin pagar por

ellos no sólo es deshonesto, sino que usted y su niño podrían enfrentar cargos

criminales y multas por hacerlo.

Enséñeles a usar sitios en los cuales

pueden pagar por usar los juegos.

Compartir historias. Cuando usted

lea un artículo en una revista o periódico

acerca de un acto honesto—quizás

alguien haya entregado una billetera llena de dinero— compártala con sus

 

niños y converse acerca de la

importancia de resistir la tentación de dejarse una cosa que no les pertenece.

Finalmente, examine su propia conducta. Si ellos la ven usando suministros de oficina que usted trajo del trabajo, le escuchan hablando acerca de maneras

de hacer trampa en los impuestos, o si la ven llamando al trabajo y diciendo que está enferma cuando no lo está, ellos van a creer que está bien hacer trampa.
