Message from Mrs. Bogosian

As you are all aware, our 2009 API score of 877 is an increase of 55 points from our 2008 score.  Recently the Statewide and Similar Schools Rankings were released.  I am extremely proud to announce that we improved from our Statewide Ranking of 7 and our Similar Schools Ranking of 3 to a 9 and 9!  Emblem Eagles continue to “Soar to New Heights!”

Recently I have heard the question, “Why continue to support Emblem when it is not my school anymore?” I know that during the next 4 weeks we will all be thinking about the changes that we are facing in the new school year.  Some of us will be remaining with Emblem at Highlands while others are off to experience other schools.  The important thing to concentrate on this last month of school is that we are all Emblem Eagles until June 11th.  I have always been amazed by the incredible amount of participation and support shown by our families.  When you attend one of our events, you would never know that we are such a small school.  I sincerely hope that our “Little School with the Big Heart” will continue to be just that until the bell rings on the last day of school.  We have some have some fun and exciting events planned to culminate our year including Family Picnic and Field Day.  I know that our Emblem Family will work together and make this last month of school a great experience for our students.  Whether you have been with us for one year or seven, you have all helped to make Emblem such a special school.  Once you have been here you are “Always an Eagle”!

Message from Mrs. Bogosian

Last week, we welcomed back Kelley Atwater (now Powel) to our office!  She will be our office manager beginning Monday, May 3rd when we say goodbye to Mrs. Medina as she starts her new position as office manager for West Creek.  We will all miss her very much!!

There has been an increasing amount of issues with students regarding exposure to inappropriate material on the internet and television at home that then becomes a problem here at school.  There have also been issues regarding the use of social networking sites.  Students have seen things on U-Tube and other sites that are not suitable for their age and then come to school and discuss them.  They also use Facebook and My Space as a way to talk about other students and in doing so post mean and hurtful things. Social Networking websites have age restrictions.  To join Facebook you must be at least 13 years old and for My Space you must be 14.

All children, but especially the very young, should be supervised while browsing the Internet It is a good idea to periodically check their history to make sure they have only been on pre-approved sites.  I encourage you to let your children know that you will be doing this on a regular basis.

The Internet can be a wonderful resource for kids. They can use it to research school reports, communicate with teachers and other kids, and play interactive games. But that access can also pose hazards. For example, an 8-year-old might do an online search for "Lego." But with just one missed keystroke the child may be directed to a slew of websites that are not appropriate.  Children cannot wade through the hundreds of results they get when doing an internet search to find the sites that are kid friendly.  I encourage you to be aware of what your kids see and hear on the Internet, who they meet, and what they share about themselves online

Message from Mrs. Bogosian

There have been questions regarding paperwork for next school year.  If you decided to have your student(s) attend your home school, no paperwork except the Intent to Return form is needed.  If you indicated on your Intent to Return form that you want your student(s) to attend a school other than your home school, a form was sent home to be completed and returned to Emblem.  Please return all forms as soon as possible.

All paperwork will be taken care of by our office and forwarded to the requested schools.  We will also forward all records and information to the other schools.

Parent/Teacher Conference

Conferencing is a very important part of our home/school partnership.  We appreciate you making every effort to attend and look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress.

Message from Mrs. Bogosian

I have serious concerns about the large amount of tardies we have been experiencing this year.  When a child comes to school late, they need to catch up to what the rest of the class is doing.  The teacher needs to interrupt the lesson to assist the late student.  This affects the entire class.  We want our students to get into the habit of being on time for their commitments.  Being late on a regular basis can lead to the attitude that school is not important.  We appreciate your help in getting your students to school on time.  Next year school will start much earlier.  Please practice now by bringing your students to school as close to 8:00 a.m. as possible.

Students with more than three tardies in an attendance period will have a letter sent home.  If the tardies continue, parents will be asked to attend a meeting of the School Attendance Review Board.  Students may also be kept after school to make up the time they missed.

Absences

If you have a student who will be absent from school, or will be coming to school late due to an appointment, it is important that you report the absence/tardy to the school office as soon as possible. You can do this by calling the “24-hour attendance phone line” at 297-8870. You may also email Mrs. Wright at lwright@saugus.k12.ca.us to let her know of your child’s absence. We appreciate your help in clearing your child’s absences.

Message from Mrs. Bogosian

Please be sure that your students are wearing appropriate foot wear to school.  The district dress code states: Tennis shoes with flat, non-skid soles – socks are to be worn at all times.  It is important that this rule is followed so students can participate in P.E. and recess safely. Flat boots may be worn on rainy days.

Attendance

If you have a student who will be absent from school, or will be coming to school late due to an appointment, it is important that you report the absence/tardy to the school office as soon as possible. Message from Mrs. Bogosian

Welcome back.  I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season.  As we begin the New Year I would like to address the importance of consistent school attendance.  We have been experiencing an unusually large number of students with frequent absences and tardies this school year.

I was surprised to find that we had 53 absences on Monday and 28 absences today. Consistent school attendance has a direct affect on academic performance.  Also, for every day that a student is absent our school loses $32.39 in funding.  In just two days, absences cost our school a total of $2647.89. In light of the serious fiscal crisis that our district is facing due to state budget cuts, loses from absences hurt even more. We understand that sometimes an absence of other than illness is unavoidable, but we would appreciate that every effort be made to take family vacations and plan appointments during breaks, nonattendance days or minimum days.

Community Meeting

On January 6, 2010 a community meeting will be held in the Emblem MPR at 7:00 P.M. to discuss the possible closure of Emblem school in the 2010-2011 school year.  District officials and school board members will be there to hear concerns, suggestions and answer questions.  You are highly encouraged to attend this meeting.

Reminder

Please sign in at the office before entering the campus, including before school.  You must sign in even if you are only going on campus for a minute or two.  It is for the safety of all our students.  Thank you.

Message from Mrs. Bogosian

Our district is facing a serious fiscal crisis bought on by cuts to our budget from the state.  We have had an $11.9 million loss of revenue this year and an $8.3 million dollar budget reduction for the 2010-11 school year is projected.

One of the cost saving measures being considered is the closing of two schools.   Our school is one of the schools being considered for temporary closure.  Thank you to all of the families that returned the survey and to the parents who were able to attend the community meeting where we discussed possible options.  If you wee unable to attend and would like to suggest a possible option feel free to email me at jbogosian@saugus.k12.ca.us.

The possible school closures will also be discussed at the school board facilities study session being held on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the Saugus Union School District office.   School closures are also scheduled to be an agenda item for the January 26, 2010 school board meeting.  These meetings are open to the public.

It is very important that we remain positive and work as a team to formulate possible solutions and options.  We must remain focused on our primary mission which is to ensure your students have the best possible school year.

Attendance

Please be sure to call the office the day your child is absent.  661 297-8870 Thank you.

Message from Mrs. Bogosian

Recently many teachers have come to me with concerns regarding the number of students not doing their homework.  Homework is necessary to reinforce your child’s school work and to teach them responsibility.  Making homework a family commitment can help your child develop lifelong study skills, self discipline and independence.  Please check your student’s binder reminder each night and ask your student to show you the finished homework.  If he/she is having trouble with the homework, contact the teacher.  If your student consistently tells you he/she does not have homework it would be a good idea to check with the teacher to be sure.

I tell students that there are three parts to homework.

ü      Bring all necessary materials home

ü      Complete the assignments

ü      Bring the work back to school.

If any of these three things do not get done then the homework has not been completed.  Getting in the habit of doing this each night will greatly benefit students as they move into the upper grades and into Jr. High and High School.

Site Council

Wednesday, December 9, 2008 at 4:00 P.M. will be our next Emblem Site Council meeting.  Emblem parents are welcome to attend. We are still in need of an additional member.

Holiday Boutique

Get a jump start on your holiday gift shopping this year at the first Emblem Holiday Boutique, December 4th, from 2-7 p.m.  This is shaping up to be a fabulous event, with something for everyone.  The Boutique still has some spaces available for vendors.  If you are interested in being a vendor please contact Melanie Cristescu at 818 388-1650 or Kimberly Mosser at 661 313-3049 for more information.  All applicants are subject to approval to make sure we have something for everyone.  Spaces are $25.00-$35.00.

We are going to be having a bake sale at the Holiday Boutique and would really appreciate donations of baked goods.  Please bring your baked goods wrapped and ready for sale the morning of December 4th.  All of the proceeds from this bake sale will go to the Emblem PTA benefiting our Emblem students.

Kitchen News

The Red Cart only accepts one dollar bills.  Please do not have your children bring in anything over $5.00 as we do not have enough change.  Thank you.

Food Drive

Student Council is sponsoring a food drive to benefit Help the Children, a local food pantry.  This month they are in need of canned meat, baking supplies and jelly.  They also need turkeys for Thanksgiving.  If you would like to donate a turkey you can drop it by the school on Friday at 3:00.  We do not have freezer space to store the turkeys, so please do not bring them in earlier.

Principal’s Message

Flu season has arrived.  I hope you will take the time to read the flu information sheet sent home in today’s Tuesday Folder.  Two important things are emphasizing the importance of hand washing with your child and keeping sick children home at least until they have been fever free without fever reducing medication for 24 hours.  Please remember to call the school office and report your child’s absence when they are out of school.

Starting Nov. 2nd we will be implementing a new lunch schedule called Recess Before Lunch.  This schedule is being used nationwide and at several schools in Saugus with much success.  I have outlined information about this new schedule in a sheet found in the Tuesday Folder.

Reminder

Please be sure to sign in at the office and take a visitor badge before entering the campus at all times.  It is for the safety of all our students.  Thank you

  • No mask that limits the student’s vision
  • No dangerous props (swords, guns etc.)

Let’s make this a fun event for all!

*If you do not want your child to attend the parade please send a note to the teacher.  An alternate activity will be provided.
