Dear Parents,

Making the Right Choices

Children can often be delightful.  They also can sometimes be deceitful or unkind, bullies or victims.  Sometimes the difference can be in the lessons they learn, both at home and at school.  Here are some ways to help your children grow up to be respectful and kind, and to have the self-respect they need to make the right choices, both now and in the future.

Face the mirror.  Too many children are very skilled at being angels in front of teachers or parents and the opposite when adults are not around.  One of the most powerful lessons parents can teach their children is this:  The real you is the way you behave when no one is watching.  Children need to learn to behave well and treat others well because that’s the kind of person they want to be, and because that’s the only way to respect the person they see in the mirror.

No Excuses.  Sometimes, parents are unaware that their children are misbehaving in school until they’re notified by a teacher.  The problem is that parents too often react with denial.  But that doesn’t help anyone, particularly not the child, who learns that he or she can get away with bad behavior at school as long as the parents are fooled.  If you get that call or note from the teacher, swallow your pride, talk to your child, and make an appointment to meet with the teacher. 

 

Stand strong.  It is difficult for children to deal with situations in which their classmates, neighbors, siblings, or friends are behaving in a bad or cruel manner.  Help them be prepared by role-playing ahead of time - act out situations they might face and see how they’d react.  Talk with them about other ways to deal with the peer pressure, and let them know that, while standing up to their friends or peers might temporarily make them less popular with that group, in the long run they will have earned the respect of those whose opinions matter more.

Blood Drive – November 10, 2008

It’s that time again to help save a life.  The Saugus Union School District will be having their annual Blood Drive on Monday, November 10, 2008 from 11:00am-5:00pm at the District Office, 24930 Avenue Stanford.  Please help with your valuable donation.  To schedule an appointment call Kathie Lanker @ 661-294-5300.

Estimados Padres,

Como Tomar Decisiones Correctas

Aunque los ninos puedan ser encantadores, también pueden ser engañosos o duros, pueden intimidar, o ser victimas de la intimidación.  A veces la diferencia puede encontrarse en las lecciones que aprenden, tanto en la casa como en las escuela.  Las siguientes son algunas sugerencias para ayudar a sus ninos a llegar a ser respetuosos y bondadosos, y tener el-auto-respeto necesario para tomar decisiones correctas, tanto ahora como en el futuro.

Mirarse en el espejo.  Muchos ninos son experimentados en comportarse como angelitos ante los maestros o sus padres, y comportarse de una manera totalmente opuesta cuando no se encuentra ningún adulto.  Una de las lecciones mas importantes que los padres les pueden enseñar a sus ninos es: la persona real que eres la demuestras con tu conducta cuando nadie te esta mirando.  Los ninos deben aprender a comportarse bien y tratar bien a los demás porque desean ser ese tipo de persona, y porque es la única manera de respetar a la persona que ven en el espejo.

Sin excusas.  A veces los padres no estan conscientes de que sus ninos se estan comportando mal en la escuela, hasta ser notificados por el maestro.  El problema es que muchos padres reaccionan de una manera negativa, aunque esta actitud no es útil, especialmente para el niño, el cual aprende que puede seguir

Comportándose mal en la escuela siempre que pueda seguir engañando a sus padres.  Si usted recibe una llamada o nota del maestro, tráguese el orgullo, converse con su niño y reúnase con el maestro. 

Ser fuerte.  Es difícil para los ninos tratar con situaciones en las cuales sus compañeros, vecinos, hermanos, o amigos se comportan mal o de una manera cruel.  Ayúdeles a estar preparados por medio de jugar diferentes papeles –actuando situaciones que podrían enfrentar y vea sus reacciones.  Converse con ellos sobre otra manera para tratar con las presiones de los amigos, y enséñeles que aunque una actitud firme ante los amigos y compañeros podría hacerlos menos populares con el grupo, a lo largo ellos se ganaran el respeto de aquellas personas cuyas opiniones sean más importantes.
